Unknown antique jar device

Post by StillsNMash »

I am thinking this jar had something to do with canning or making persimmon wine, but i have not been able to find anything on this device i found under the stairs in the basement of our old house.

It seems to be missing some parts, and the lid is mostly rusted away. But the intriguing part is whats left. Think of a pint sized mason jar with a lid that had a cigar shaped cylinder on its side mounted to the lid. Off the side of the cylinder extending through the lid and into the mason jar looks like a small heating element or some other type of element to probe the contents of the jar. Age would be circa 1960s, 70s or 80s. My wifes grandmother lived in the house for about 80 years until her death three years ago. Maybe some old timers may know what this may be.

Really neat find. Would love to know what it is.

Thanks.
Stills.

Agh! Well, My photobucket sprung a leak and the bulb burned out in my flickr. Guess Imgur will have to do. Teach me to use my phone . . .

More appropriate would be to post the images directly to the HD site.

Looks like a homemade torch of some kind.

you used to be able to order a fogger attachment with your brand new kirby vacuum.

are you sure that's an element and not just a tube?

+1 about hosting your pictures on HD, they disappear otherwise.

I have found a lot of things by putting pictures into Google Image.

It's a pre-microwave era Nuclear Whiskey jar.

The closest thing i can come up with is it looks like a micro water heater wlement. The part in the jar is solid, but the tube on the lid is hollow like something fir in it, maybe similar to the electric skillets. GIS and other searches ive done have been fruitless.

I think Cob is close to the mark....it's some sort of spray attachment for an old vacuum cleaner.

Mason jar carbide lamp. Put calcium carbide in the jar with a bit of water and it generates acetylene.

My memory has it that a vacuum cleaner sprayer had one straight tube into the container. I threw mine away 30 years ago so I can't check, sorry.
