I’m back kinda maybe we will see.

Post by Prairiepiss »

Hello everyone. Glad to see you all haven’t burnt the still shed down. While I have been away. A lot of things have happened over the last few years. Thought I would give a little update.

I just got back to the Off grid homestead 2 months ago. I had been living in Hawaii since June of 2019. My work selected me to be the first to go over and setup operations covering the whole state. I was living on Oahu in a normal on the grid house. I got a little spoiled. I was traveling between The 4 main islands. Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Was on a different island every week pretty much. Sometimes 2 and others all 4 islands in one week. I racked up a lot of southwest miles and Bonvoy points. I was only supposed to be there for just shy f one year. Tax reasons. But COVID hit and Hawaii got locked down. They couldn’t get my replacement trained. And couldn’t get him over to replace me. So I was there an extra 6 months. And it was a PITA. All the islands were locked down. I had to get letters from everyone and their brother to fly to the other islands. Had to quarantine in my hotel room. Only go to my job sites and back to the room. Was supposed to have my food delivered to my room. Couldn’t even go through a drive through to get food. Had to wear a mask everywhere. Everything was basically shut down. Most all the hotels were closed. Luckily the ones I stayed in stayed open. Some islands had curfews. Had to carry letters with me in case they wanted to harass me about being out and about. The wife had came back to MO back when it all began. So I was there by myself from April till October when my replacement finally got there.

Anyway it was a great and sucky experience all in one whack. Got some really cool pics. Picked up another hobby I got out of a long time ago. Built some RC cars to keep me occupied and not go stir crazy. Kauai is my favorite island. Second is the Big Island. Third is Maui. And They can keep Oahu. To many people too crowded traffic sucks. If you never had a pineapple from Hawaii. You have to get one. You can order them from the Dole website and have it shipped to your house. The crap you buy here in the stores is just crap. The ones there are the best damn thing in the world. Ok maybe not but really high up on the list. If I was to actually live there. I would so be fermenting pineapples. They are so sweet.

Ok so I’m back to the Off grid homestead. I am about to start building a 30x64 shop/house on 40 acres I am buying around the corner from the original 80 we bought. It will be 32 foIt shop and 32 foot house. I just bought 40 230 watt solar panels to put on the roof. So it will be off grid also. But grid power is just across the road. I have acquired a few big pieces of stainless goodness. And I am seriously considering putting them to good use and going legit. The 40 acres is actually 2 20 acre lots. I’m building the shop/house on one. And thinking about putting another shop on the other. To use as a distillery. I’m just in the thinking stages of this. And I have a lot of catching up to do. And an over abundance of research to do. I’m sure a lot of things have changed since I last researched any of it. So you may see me pop in here from time to time trying to catch up. But I have quite a few things in my plate right now. I will probably start some threads about the new big still plans I have come up with. Spoiler alert: Fu Man may get a big brother. Or cousin maybe. LoL

I think that’s enough ranting for now.

Great to hear from you, PP, amazing what goes on in a life when you don't hear for a while.
What a strange thing to go from off-grid to Hawaii and back again.
Best of luck on the transition, and super curious to hear about distillery, keep us posted.
Take care.

Good to hear things are going well for you.

Stuck on Hawaii with DW stuck on the mainland? I'm not sure i'd be too eager to resolve that problem. LOL.

Looking forward to hearing more of the adventures. Cheers!

Welcome back PP. Spent 3 years in Hawaii back in the 90s. I loved the weather, but not the high cost of living. I'm sure it's way higher now. Welcome back to the mainland.

Why Maui? Just curious why not the other islands? But then again you can just hop a plane to one of the other islands for around $100 round trip. I would definitely suggest checking out Kauai and the Big Island. They are cheaper by the way. Maui is the most expensive island to visit there. Oahu is the cheapest probably.

Maui had quite a few wild fires while I was there. Hated the walk to the rental cars at the airport. Maui is very touristy. I got so sick of tourist. But there was times after covid shut everything down. I was the only one in the airport’s. I had like 4 or 5 flights I was the only one in the plane. Honolulu airport normally has 300,000 people through it a week. And it was a ghost town.

20 years ago we honeymooned in Hawaii. Went to the Big Island, Oahu and Kauai. Kauai was straight up beautiful. Got great memories of jumping off a waterfall there - Kipu Falls. We went to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see the volcano. We were in the park until after sunset one night to see the lava reflected in the cloud of steam it makes when it enters the ocean. Turns out the whole town by the park closes at 8:00. We had some peanut butter crackers for dinner that night. I'm told the other side of the island is a different world.

On Oahu, we thought the North side of the island was much nicer than Waikiki area. Had a amazing meal off a trailer parked across the street from a beach on the North Shore.

Welcome back. I'm a noob but I have been seeing your name here for some time.

Kauai is beautiful. If I had a choice of which island to live on it would be Kauai.
The Kona side of the big island has grown a lot probably from when you were there. And it has completely different weather Then the Hilo side. It’s not as lush. But beautiful in its own right.
North shore or the whole northern side of Oahu is the best part of that island.
