Exracting NGS from steel drum

Post by Welsh and Foolish »

Hi there fellow distillers. Hope everyone is keeping well?

I have a question regarding extracting NGS from a steel drum. Namely, how on earth do I do it? I've been purchasing NGS in 25 litre containers which are easy to pour into my measuring vessel. However the steel drum weighs about 150kg's (400 pounds). My guess is I need to funnel it out? Or maybe use a syringe (glass or stainless steel). What happens when I need to extract from deep, what material do I use? I don't want to contaminate the alcohol with chemicals.

I can only apologise for how stupid I must sound to you guys. Again, all your comments good and bad are hugely appreciated.

Warm regards,

Mark

In a commercial setting I'd say they probably have a barrel lift, but assuming you don't, I'd use a syphon.

You'll need:
3/8 or 1/2" soft copper tube i.e. no plastic
Two hole bung of appropriate size
Collection container

Put a longer piece of tube through the bung so that one end nearly reaches the bottom of the barrel and the other is resting in your collection container beside or lower than the barrel. Put a short piece of pipe in the second bung hole (LoL) and push the bung into the hole so it seals. Apply air pressure to the short pipe to start the syphon, block it to stop. Done.

You could use air pressure.

With an oil-free compressor and a low pressure.

Not sure about wether the aluminum or cast iron crank case will have an issue, but something like this would do the job...

This one is stainless and might be a better solution...

Thanks very much for this. I have found one in the UK that is compatible with alcohol. I've purchased this and it will be arriving in a week or so. You're a legend.

Yes, I definitely need one of these. Those drums are so heavy it's unbelievable. Thanks for your advice friend.
