Less expensive mashtun than a Grainfather?

Post by Single Malt Yinzer »

For us small batch folks I think this would do a great job as a mash tun (100 cups = 6.25 gallons)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M1NTVJS" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow (No temp control)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004FNZM9C" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow (With temp control)

When hooked up with this:

You would need to hand stir/vorlauf but that's not much trouble. Also would be great for gelatinizing corn.

Thoughts?

If it has the "secret" heating coils under the bottom I think it would do fine. There may be a small issue with "Scorching" so your stirring would need to be pretty continuous I think.

I use something very similar as a still ! - Also for "Sous vide" cooking.

They do have thermosats on them which prevent boiling, which I had to bypass, but that may not be an issue for you.

I got mine second hand for around £50.
