Was looking at the garborator the other day and got me to thinking.
you drop fruit down there that has hard stones, run the thing and you always have to pull the stones out.
the stones always have a chip or two out of them but are for the most part whole.
I've seen garborators used for chipping apples, maybe one'd make a decent de-stoner?
anyone trieds such a thing? or is there something better.
I'd like to find a quick and easy way of dealing with apricots plums and cherries.

Sounds like a good idea... waste disposal or blender or the like... Would you have to root through the fruit mush for the chips or not? I thought they gave a nasty taste, from what I've read. The other thing, although they might handle the occasional bit of stoned fruit quite well, I think you might quickly wreck one like that... plus, you'd have to do a couple and reach in and take out stones... sounds like a bit of effort, but better than using a knife, maybe? not sure really. Good idea either way.

Large stonefruit pulp up nicely if frozen, thawed, and chopped with a mortar mixer in a bucket with water. The stones, and any bits of the occasional broken stone end up on the bottom of the bucket. Just pour off the pulp and liquid into yer fermenter leavin' the stones behind. I've never gotten any flavour from the stones this way.violentblue wrote:I'd like to find a quick and easy way of dealing with apricots plums and cherries.
Cherries are a bit harder. I have gotten some flavour from the stones in cherries when pulped with a mortar mixer (thnx Tater). So with cherries I freeze, thaw, and squish by the handful into my fermenter. Ya gotta sanitise yer hands first and be comfortable with this sort of thing. I know the idea of hand squeezin' any fermentable would make most of my brewer buddies cringe. Heh. I ferment the cherries with the tiny stones still in the fermenter. Cherrie stones only seem to give a flavour when chopped or crushed.
I hope some of this helps ya, and if ya discover any new ways to process fruit please share!
I wish ya luck.

the wire type office trash cans are handy .Just pour thawed fruit berries into it and stir along the side with hand stones skins stay in juice and pulp come through.
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper
