Corny Kegs

Post by Windswept »

Never used one, but there's a bunch for sale on locally, was planning on using them for low wines storage and aging.

I did a search here but got a mess-load of results, anything I need to know other than taking out any rubber gaskets?

I took the tubes out of mine and capped their holes, and wrapped the oring on the lid in PTFE tape. I use them for low wines, feints and wash storage.

+1

They're super handy cuz they don't weigh much and store easily under benches and such. You will have to figure out a better way to empty them than I did. Pouring a corny full of low wines through the handles into a bucket proved a tricky affair which elicited some rather unsavory language that could be heard inside the house.

Cool, bought 3, I’ll probably siphon them out!

Looking forward to retiring some carboys!

I've got 11 cornies ... after having sold 10 about 10 years ago.
As long as the O rings aren't exposed to high proof ethanol, I feel safe using them.
I currently use them to store backset/dunder and low wines (short term only).

Leave the tubes in the cornies and use CO2 pressure to push it out. It doesn't use much CO2 and is much easier on the back for an old man.
I do that with beer all the time.

"As long as the O rings aren't exposed to high proof ethanol, I feel safe using them."

If they are exposed to the vapour they are exposed to the ethanol.

Simple to wrap them in plumbers' tape.

Where did you find all of the rings in the right sizes and shape for the corny kegs? I'd love to buy some and use some of my homebrew kegs for storing liquor!

I posted a list of vendors some time ago. o-rings west was one of them.

possably even posted the dash numbers for a refit,

the dash # is defined by the thickness + ID.+OD.

the 6 connector rings are dash 1 (1/16 thick)

the lid is dash 4 (1/4 thick) I have used dash 3 also

there are no special shapes an o-ring is an o-ring

no matter what the material. put o-rings west,or

chicago o-ring in the search bar or PTFE o-ring

it might get you to those old posts. do the same on the

net and you will find other vendors. make sure you

are looking at PTFE.

I'm not advocating using them to store high proof alcohol. Corny kegs have been used by homebrewers for decades to store and serve beer that can be anywhere from 4 to 15% ABV (or even more). I'm only talking about storing backset/dunder (which should be very near zero pct ABV), and for temporarily holding low wines until the next finish run.

Hi... timely post for me as well, thanks OP.
I want to store/age on wood 125 proof liquid in a corny.

How do I seal the keg and transfer the liquid out?
I can take out the gas and liquid tubes and fittings and use a tiny cork to seal the fitting holes.
Wrapping teflon tape around the big lid gasket seems risky to me and my lids have a rubber PRV seal too....
Other options are? Make a wood or cork lid to fit not overly hard...

@twisted brick and others...
How do you get 5 gallons of liquid out besides dumping the keg? The only thing I can think of is a copper or stainless siphon tube, which will be fun :)

thanks for the help!

I have 1 keg that has a single handle on the top with no plastic "bounce rim" (I think it's a PepsiCo). I use that one for storage of feints or high proof spirits, because it's easy to pour from. Backset or distillers beer goes in the others, and either dip out what I need with a jar, or push it with co2.
