Heating element
Will I be able to turn a 5500w element enough to use in a 8gal milk can using a scr controller?

Are you thinking ULWD ripple or simple foldback? Passing through a triclamp ferrule?

Yes I ordered a 1.5" TC 5500w ulwd ripple from brewhardware. Yes, the SCR will give you plenty of adjustment. It will be nice to have the upper range of power to get things going quicker with the smaller boiler as well.
The word "down" (turn down) is missing in the original post, so I assumed you were trying to figure out if things would fit physically.

No I was meaning as far as would my scr turn it down low enough to work with my 8gal boiler.... Generally in controllers you have a lot of maneuvering margin, you can almost turn them off and then go up almost to the maximum

Well I guess I should of measured lol. The problem is fixed now (I hope), my only concern is if I'm going to be able to "snake" the 1.5"x2" long extension over the ripple element.

What if my element touched the side of the ferrule would it electrocute me?

I was going to say, you'd be hard pressed to get that in a 8 gallon still. Mine just fits in my 13 gallon milk can with just about a mm to spare before it hits the other side of the boiler, and I had to massage the ripple to get me there. Adding the 2" long spool is the option Im going for when/if I have to replace the current element.

YES! Water tested no leaks!!!!

I, too use the same element to drive different sized boilers. Just a word of caution. I burned out an element while driving it almost full during heat up. The failure occurred near the base of the element. I assume the restriction caused by the spool caused the element to heat unevenly, or maybe a bit of air got trapped in the spool. Since then I keep the max wattage below 4500W in the smaller boiler. I haven't lost another element.
