Here's a typical 4" shotgun Dephleg
There are eight 8" long x 1/2" id condenser tubes
The entire unit is 12" tall Including it's copper porn cap
I haven't weighted it yet, but full of water it's heavy

I also have a shotgun dephlagmater but with 3/4” tubing and my water and the dephlagmater slide in from the top of the column.

Here is a Dimroth style of dephleg
Shown without it's copper mesh packing
Nine different sized turns of 1/4" id
Probably 5 or 6 feet total length
It used to be bigger

Your rig was the first slide in Deph I'd seen
I bet it works better than the average shotgun
There's alot more surface area for the vapor to condense on.

Almost time to test the shotgun.
There's 14Gal of water being heated with two 4,500w elements.
One heater is controlled, the other can be switched between 120v or 240v
The shotgun dephleg is sitting on top a 4" x 36" column packed with SS scrubbies
The cooling water in is 55'F and the flow is controlled with a needle valve in the inlet side.

The shotgun could knock down all 9kw of steam
I adjusted the water flow until a slow steady drip was coming from the product condenser.
That's were I'd run it for taking off the heads. Just under 99% reflux
The cooling water outflow was 1.8 L/M @ 167'f

Time for the dimroth.
First, I'll run it without it's wad of copper mesh

The dimroth was also able to knock down 9kw
With 1.7 L/M @ 182'f cooling water out
Next I'll pack the dimroth with copper mess and see what happens

I was surprised, adding the packing didn't make any difference

Interesting I am a bit surprised as well unless you are already at maximum with out the packing.

The finned dephleg couldn't handle full power but it got close.
4,500w one element and 205vac to the other
The cooling water flow was 8ish Liters per minute @ 92'F

This really surprised me. I figured stuffing some copper mesh here might help
Wrong

In my non scientific anal isie :D The 3 tubes carrying the cooling water are most of the heat exchange and the change in temperature conducted to the fins is not reacting fast enough because there is minimal contact

Dimroth Dephlegmator

Post by shadylane »

The parts are on order
Small diameter copper tubing and thin copper sheet.
The dimroth dephleg will be of the coiled slide in type

Dimroth Dephlegmator Build

Post by shadylane »

The parts have been ordered
1/4 tubing and thin copper sheet
The dephleg will be a slip in type, with extra surface area on the coiled tubing.
I'm not sure of the exact design, but I'm sure we will figure it out

The forge was used to anneal 1/4 od tubing so it was easier to bend
I'm kinda thinking about using two beehive shaped coils in parallel
Originaly I was going to cut copper strips and soldier them to the coils To increase the surface area
I'm not sure if I'm going to do it that way now.

Yep, not enough tubes and maybe too many fins.
Firgure I might as well try something else.
There's a couple ideas rattling around in my head
I'm also open to suggestions

I just checked on the order for a long 1" strip of 16g copper
It shipped Chinese express, that might take a week or 3
So I decided to see how tight I can bend 3/8 od copper tubing
To keep the inside from colapsing while it's being bent
I figured to use a piece of aluminum for a core
An old ladder supplied the aluminum

On a side note check out the DIY belt sander
Yes that's a lawnmower wheel

That is exactly what is going on, I'm betting if someone crunched the numbers you would find the column would flood before that dropped below 100% efficiency so making it "more efficient" would be dern tricky to measure

Here's the latest test model
I'll test it with the cone shape
Then collapse it down so it's spiral shaped like a heating element on a cook stove
It's bare copper for now, once I see what it can do
I'll be adding surface area to see what happens

It appears that the cone shape is better than having the coils tighter and more compact.
The knock down power decreased if the coils were any tighter than this.

More dwell time thru the coils?
