My best liebig yet....
and my first. Seems to work really well even when pushed hard. I did get some huffing at the higher temps/ faster output, but I'll never run that fast and I will play with the cooling rates. 1" over 1/2", body is 20" long. Hope the attachments work.

Nice job. Those baffles look like they will mix your cooling water well.

Your boiler looks interesting, did you start off with a cheap Chinese still and then modified it?
How do you ensure the thumper don't overfill?

Yes, it is my cheap chinese still mentioned in my intro. As you might see, besides the head and thumper there is a skirt pressed on it to serve as a double boiler. This was a test run of the rig where I ran a bunch of crap heads and tails though a mix of goopy "Apple Pie" in the thumper. I ran pretty hard to check everything out out on a first run. The half gallon run on the thumper didn't change much at all. I heated up the thumper on the stove and was depending on the boiler heat from the cover of the still to keep it from condensing more liquid into the thumper.Swedish Pride wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2019 9:03 am Your boiler looks interesting, did you start off with a cheap Chinese still and then modified it?

I'm really not looking for anything more than imparting a good fruit flavor/ smell to the brandies/ schnapps on the way out of the still. In the future, I'll be bypassing the thumper until all of the fores and a good portion of the heads have passed. The flavors I am looking for seem to be stuck mostly in the late heads. For the garbage I was distilling, the aromas came over quite nicely.

Even a liebig that long should have some sort of prop or support under the end of it. The wieght of the water in the condenser and hoses adds up.

I use a high tech stick for support.

Don't be shy: you made a very nice installation. Very professional in different ways.

I'm impressed . With proper coolant regulation that should handle anything you throw at it .

Re: My best liebig yet....
I felt as though I owed you a complete response about the thumper. Today I did a slow finishing run on three strips of apple ferment.
The three stripping runs where done without the thumper and ran pretty slow, discarding what I thought was fores/ early heads (200 ml) in each. Although the alcohol hearts smelled and tasted pretty good, there was very little apple aroma to be detected.
Today I loaded all three apple runs, diluting to 40% ( about two gallons) and ran without thumper in-line until most of the foul fores and heads were gone. Meanwhile the thumper bucket loaded with 36 oz of frozen apple concentrate, about a pound of apple peels and another 12 oz of water was on the stove being warmed to about 175 degrees F. After reaching temp, I installed thumper and finished the run. Afterwards, checking the bucket, I might have gained a couple oz but no overfills. I could see where it "bubbled" about halfway up the two gallon bucket though. I quit collecting at 40% as I could detect a few off flavors coming through. Really good run, crystal clear high proof with a hint of apple aroma. I like it. I'll be putting about a quart (90 proof) on toasted apple wood just to see what happens with the flavor/ color. The rest (unproofed) I'll leave as is in the jug for now.
Really happy with the performance of the Liebig and thumper.
