The books were written 40ish years ago by Students that went through the Hills, asking Old Folks about how life once was.
The students figured the Old Folks had valuable knowledge that needed recorded

I figure to use some 12oz copper sheet for the defleg's inner and outer walls
On a side note.
Look at my avitar, to me everything is crazy
Normal appearing people make me nervous
I suspect they're better at deception than the rest of us.

It's not a cold finger condenser.

I'm disappointed in last condenser, thought it would work better than it did.
Anyway, it's time for the next design.
I think the next defleg will be in the shape of an inverted funnel

BTW : keen to see how the cold finger helps . Couldn’t help wonder about the vapour chimney up the middle of your last one though .Cold finger should stop that .

Wonder if water flow direction will make a difference

Re: Dephlegmator Comparision
The cold finger made a small difference
3.4 L/M to knock down 6kw of steam
Changing the cooling water flow didn't have any effect on knock down power.

Good onya Shady for playing and saying .
Gotta say I expected the cold finger to do a lot better .... but the prove is what it is .
Out of interest , how long was the concentric sheet condenser ( buggered if I know what you call it )

down the road when i get my flute built im def gonna try some designs. I was using some packed CM columns i designed before but i have since went back to pot and thumper. the packed column didnt make the kind of one and done spirit i wanted. it was good but not good enough. the packing strips too much flavor out IMO.
anyway i was thinking of one that would be like one of those CFL lightbulbs with all the U shapes instead of the helix/coil style. all ran in series or even parallel via a coolant intake manifold.

Re: Dephlegmator Comparision
So I decided to revive an old thread to try and contribute with some info that I have tried. I wound up building two different dephlegs for my flute during my build. I decided to try doing my first BW and running high reflux on 4” at 5500 watts. The first attempt was with a seven tube RC with 3/4 nominal tubing. To get complete reflux I was running in the neighborhood of 9-10 quarts a minute to knock it all down (seems high, but timed into quart jars repeatedly was in the 6 second fill time). I shut down and put my identical RC with 1” nominal tubes on top. The cooling water rate went to about 12-13 seconds per jar. Both dephlegs have 4.5” of cooled surface. The only real differences would be dwell time due to more open area and of course with less water space it would have a faster turnover rate. Here’s an image of both dephlegs.
Since I know have a dedicated water supply, and can see my results I am starting to look into the Shady’s style and numbers. I also can’t help but think about there not being any possibility of anything pooling on top of the RC. I have wound up a couple coils so far, but haven’t decided which one to run. Ones about 6’ of 3/8 O.D. and the other about 7’ of 1/4” O.D.

Re: Dephlegmator Comparision
You have my attention, go for it
Re: Dephlegmator Comparision
You did most of the work before. I just swapped over to well fed lines and plumbed independently instead of out of a reservoir. It was crazy to see the water flow of my dephleg vs condenser. Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for the coils prior to installation? For the tests I may try mounting them so that they can be tested in both directions, cone up and cone down.
Re: Dephlegmator Comparision
I decided to try out the 1/4” OD first, with hopes that it is the better of the two. I’ll be happy if it is at least better than what I have to cut down water consumption on neutral runs. Here’s the pieces fit without solder to this point. Is there any foreseen issues before buttoning it up? I do plan to try and get my fittings shortened up prior to solder. I don’t trust the thin wall small stuff to support the weight of cooling lines.

Re: Dephlegmator Comparision
On the same lines as your build.
You will need a very fine adjustment water valve.
