Corrugated Coax for CCVM

Post by shadylane »

Here's some corrugated coax that might be usable for making a CCVM.
It's available in sizes from 1/4" and up.

They look really interesting, have a higher cost of the stainless steel version I imagine?

I'm thinking corrugated copper would be easier to work with than SS and conduct heat better.
Just for shits and grins, I might order some of the 1/4" coax and see if the insulation can be removed.

I think it is easily removable the isolation .. I tried to look for Italian sites but I didn't find that tube (only for my curiosity ...). I believe the copper is also excellent in stainless steel columns to have a little benefit.

The coaxial wire I’ve seen like that has a longitudinal split along the shield. I’d be surprised if that doesn’t as well. It’s how I would assume it is fabricated; rolled around the core before the jacket is shrunk on.

Good luck....I hope it works.

I would also be wondering what alloy was use in that copper.

Scoring and ripping the outer cover isn't too much of an issue. Unless this is cheaply made RF coax, removing the white dielectric will be a bitch. This stuff usually isn't cheap either. The part number and manufacturer should be on the outer covering every foot or so. Use this data to reference the specs on the product. The Internet is a wonderful thing.

I’ve used that stuff at our local FM radio transmitter site . Black jacket comes off easy but you won’t get the foam insulation out . Its bonded to the copper.

No join/overlap then? Just a corrugated tube?

Yup . Corrugated tube . Pretty sure its HDPE foam . Maybe it could be burned out .But not sure how the subsequent annealing would effect the ability to make a coil out of it .( I presume the OP imagined winding a coil similar to using CSST )

Who made the corrugated copper and where can we buy that?

Is there a simple method of removing everything we don't want from the coax?

I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking, but I'll have a look. Don't wait for me.

As far as I know the common coax cable, I‘d like to say „forget it“. But should be easy to find out. Can imagine some evil chemics magic could remove the inner plastic. Imho, very much fuzz and toxic waste for a couple of centimeters of copper tube.

I have two 9" lengths of corrugated copper tubing that I took off a faulty kitchen faucet and haven't used yet. No plastic has to be removed :D

The white dielectric is made from Teflon in most mil-spec RF cable. BTW, Most copper used in wire/ cable is virgin copper. Sometimes it appears silver because it is silver plated for conductivity. Wonder about your taxes and the defense budget yet?
