Trying to identify a part

Post by Tom Kat »

I am trying to replace this part with brand new. I bought a 1/2" male fitting and it did not work. Does anyone know exactly what this is?

It is half of a union.
Those threads will only fit the union nut and are not standard so they will only fit from the same manufacturer.

I agree with Windy . I have a few of them and they aren’t interchangeable . I am going to replace mine with triclamps

It's one half of 1/2" copper union..

But careful in trying to buy a union and only using one half of it.. 1/2" union come in different thread sizing even though they are made for a 1/2" pipe..

You may find a manufacturer's mark which would help in matching bits.

+1 heat the joint, and pull that elbow off your existing liebig, and sweat it onto your new liebig that you are building.

The size of the flats where you put a wrench on it varies by brand too. Some have more (smaller) flats and round off easier. If you'll be disassembling and reassembling a lot I would try to find one with large wrench flats. Nibco makes some really good ones.

Before you assemble the new one, lap the mating surfaces with a little toothpaste

to see if there are any defects in the mating surfaces, much easier before assembly.

I have a bucket full of copper unions and always check fit up before assembly.

I'm going to have to check out the stainless ones.

Most of you guys in Australia seem to use stainless unions, they must be more common there than they are here. I'm sure they're available online but I've never seen one in a supply house here in the US. I like the sound of it though. They have to be more durable and probably have less manufacturing defects.

now we both learned something new today because i've never seen a stainless one that I can recall

mine are copper copper with a brass or bronze nut, and they can take damage with handling.

Just buy them in the local plumbing store here....many sizes from 1/4 through to 2 inch Think I would have to order anything bigger.
