Go big or go home- 42" Liebig

Post by Tom Kat »

I enjoyed building this condenser.

Someone said (my ex wife?) 12" wasn't getting it done.

So I created an extension. Actually it is 100% new construction.

3/4" over a 1/2" tube. This should knock down some vapor...

Not bad... but not quite as good as my 48"

Should serve you well! Probably going to want something to hold it up.

A prop to put under it can be made from any thing...bar stool.....step ladder.....back of a chair......forked stick ..
...or some thing like these.

I run a 42 inch liebig at times but its inch over 3/4...none of that fancy spiral wire stuff....it will still do 20+L an hour if you pump enough water through it.

I have eye bolts in the rafters of the shop that support what ever

needs to be supported with small welded chain or small cable.

I used one for a shoulder therapy that would hold my fat ass.

Stupid Q, but what's the point of that wire coil around the inner tube?

It forces the water to spiral around the inner pipe ensuring there are no voids . Some do it some don’t . I’ve always done it as it takes very little extra work and I can run my condenser almost horizontal if necessary .
He's a pic of my short liebig running on a cold night .

Once apon a time people didnt twist wire.....they just
"crimped" the inner tube to stop the laminar flow of the vapours , that also helped disturb the water flow on the outside of the inner tube at the same time.
Seems to be a forgotten thing now......people only worry about the water flow.
Worked then and still does for me.

I had the wire on hand and it was easy to add it. So hopefully it helps make the condenser more efficient.

Thank you! That's a great picture of what I believed to be the purpose of the wire.

My sister lives near the Gold Coast...so what's you idea of a cold night :D
I like to send my brother in law pictures from here so he can appreciate what cold really is...this winter we hit -17F one night.

I'm a newb, so my thoughts are probably worth the price you are paying...

I have a similar liebig and added a ball valve to control the water flow coming out of the liebig. With the valve wide open, I get huffing. With the valve mostly closed and just a steady drip coming out of the liebig, I get a nice temperature gradient down about half of the leibig. Here's a video showing what I mean.

I just set a 20 pound sledge hammer on the floor with the handle sticking straight up. I put a rubber coated clamp like this one around the liebig. You can slide the clamp up or down the condenser until the height is perfect to sit on top of the hammer handle. It's actually really solid. The top of the hammer handle can't move at all once it's wedged in the crotch between the tab on the clamp and the condenser. Hope that makes sense.

You guys think your 42 or 48 inchers are big with lots of capacity. Coil up 25ft and put it in a bucket so as that 23 or 24 are below the water line and now you have a beast for a condenser. Cold water in the bottom and hot out the overflow at the top. You always have a nice temp gradient and have reserve cooling if you do happen to have a hiccup in the flow of cooling water. I will put my worm and flakestand up against a liebig anytime.

I don't disagree with you Butch. I've got a worm and flake too. But liebigs take up a lot less space, which is handy when you're not doing it out in the woods. Pretty easy to build and use too.

Crimp the inner huh? I coiled up some GND wire from some romex and insert that into the vapor tube with a little copper.. Not the complete 48" length of the liebig but maybe a couple feet? It's removable too if I want to modify it!

Cheers!

Got one of those.
And an eight foot long two inch by one and a quarter inch liebig.
And a similar one maybe five feet long that I stuck a three quarter inch copper pipe
down the middle of, to make it a Davies condenser.
Water in the inside and the outside tube and vapour in the middle tube.
Hope to have it all going again soon on electric (used to be gas).
