Shotgun condenser name question.

Post by Newtothis »

Shouldn’t they be called a Gatling gun condenser over a shotgun condenser. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shotgun with more than 2 barrels except for a few one off 3 barrel designs. Now Gatling guns usually have 5 to 7 barrels in a circle. Just curious.

I agree , it’s a stupid name .
Some have referred yo them as Gattling gun condensers in the past , but the name Shotty , seems to have stuck .

It’s as annoying to me as Triac controllers being called SCR controllers even though they have a Triac and not an SCR in them . We can blame the China machine and Fleebay for starting the SCR thing .

Alas , the Shotty thing seems to have began here .

Shell and tube condenser is the tech field name. Sounds kind of shotty to me but when in Rome.

Gatling gun is old school. Now it would be MRLS (multiple rocket launcher system)

Taking a shot in the dark here. May be called a shotgun because it resembles the shot spread of buck or bird shot?

I feel your pain. Most folks where I am call a current switch a "CT".

Before triacs were commercially available, controllers used a pair of SCRs in inverse parallel, hence the name.

How about most folks calling a SSVR "Solid-State Voltage Regulator" a SSR "Solid-State Relay"

Argh! I spent a long time trying to get my head around what components I needed for a controller before I finally realised that no-one was using the right name.

On the other hand, I'll admit that sometimes it really helps the day progress when calling things wrong intentionally.

Shotty reminds me more of a pepperbox pistol, since in a pepperbox the barrels are visible from the end but a cylinder from the side.

Boy wouldn't that cause some newbie confusion when talking flow path. "You mean I have to add pepper to my whisky when using a column?"

That would cause confusion as in my area a "monkey Wrench" was the term for a pipe wrench. The above adjustable wrench went by the brand name "Crescent" wrench.

Ah yes, that name floated around too. So did the term for diagonal cutting tool we affectionately referred to as "dykes".

Them are still dykes in my book. I’m way too lazy to sound out all the words that make up the proper name.

This rope gripper is referred to as a “pork chop” in my neck of the woods.

See, I think of a Gatling gun condenser as one that is essentially multiple liebigs in a circle, each one having it's own shell. Someone built one like that a while back. It sure looks cool too... ... maybe in my current goofy things I should try that

I hope the following story doesn't offend anybody but it is definitely not PC but it actually happened the way I tell it
The other discussion reminded me of a time when I was working with a couple guys. We were outside a building working on something and as one of them was about to walk into the building to get some tools the other shouted "BRING A PAIR OF DYKES WITH YOU"

At that very moment one of the ladies who worked there and her wife, whom she was showing around, stepped through the door. The guy who was going to get the tools looked at them, turned to us and did his best game show model pose and everybody just died laughing  Fortunately the ladies felt it was also funny.

That’s funny right there Cranky. It’s good innocent fun like that. Dr says it’s good for the heart to laugh. I’m sure it does a number for the soul as well

Hee hee , I was doing an antenna install at a Lesbian couples place one day . Just as I was about to ask “ can you show me where your Manhole is “ , I suddenly felt all PC . I asked them where the Ceiling access point was .
Sensing my awkwardness, one of them laughed and said “oh the man hole is in the laundry” .

It's a lot easier to write shotgun, than it is to write "Gatling gun condenser"

Not to forget the condenser name... Again, the resemblance to buckshot spread is the most logical IMO.
But, anyway...

Ill go with the bubble stick, but that there is an adjustable spoon.

You can stir your tea with an old school fixed spoon, but technology has moved on and it just aint the tool for the job anymore.

Like eating chicken soup with a refrigeration hammer....

To veer slightly closer to topic, i just finished my shotgun. Got to do some cleaning up and some file and paper work, but she is watertight and the clamps fit.

There were points during the build when i wanted to shoot something, anything, possibly myself.

And then once i finished it, i spent the obligatory few minutes pretending to shoot the dog and the mrs with it. Because I'm an adult.

I think these things have something to do with the fact that the name shotgun stuck in the collective psyche.

Nobody jumps out at the mrs and pretends they have a gatling gun. They take the bitch out in one shot, zombie style.

It isnt uncommon for someone to jump out from a door way with nerf guns blazing and expect you to fall down dead.
Sometimes its even the kids...

Point being that boys will be boys, and so will fully grown adult men.
