G type keg

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

G type keg

Post by ryanm444 »

Soni have decided to upgrade and build myself a new still with a keg as the boiler and the simple packed column . I was planing on connecting the column with a tri clamp . I have removed the spear from the g type keg but can remove the triangle part on the top. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove this ?Image

If that is indeed a screw in piece as Saltbush mentioned. I would get a big wrench to fit the flats on the top piece and take a torch and heat the bottom collar. That should cause it to swell a bit so you can unscrew the top piece.

I don't know if I'm remembering correctly or not, but left handed threads comes to mind for some reason.

They don't need heating , just need a big pipe wrench and some muscle.

I have a pipe wrench but it won’t budge it. Tried hitting it extending it but it’s not moving . Can there be anything holding it in place?

It could be corroded or the threads may have galled a bit and as was mentioned earlier it may be a left handed thread. That is why I mentioned a bit of heat on the collar . It may help it loosen up enough to get it to move one way or the other. You could also use some type of penetrant and try giving it a squirt every few minuets to see if that will help break it free.

This does not look like one of the ones to come apart to me. I guess there has to be a way to remove it but its not like any I've dicked with.

I had a keg that I couldn't budge with a normal size pipe wrench .( read about 1 foot long handle )
Borrowed set of big buggers with a handle nearly 3 foot long . Jambed a pipe through the handles to stop the keg twisting and finally with a lot of brute force the bastard moved
Two keg styles I've had both similar to yours had anti-clockwise to undo thread .... but its always worth trying it both ways .

Only way for you to find out is beg borrow or buy a ferule and clamp and see for yourself . You may have to grind the edge off those 3 lugs if the diameter is too big . I had an 80 liter keg I had to do that to .

You could try to make an "easy flange " and some sort of home made custom clamp .

You could cut this one off and get a 4" ferrule welded on .... this would be the best solution . And get a fill port welded on at the same time :D
