Repurpose an electric water heater?

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Repurpose an electric water heater?

Post by cIRCitmage »

Given the creativity of the community, wondering is anyone has repurposed an electric water heater

SS lined
Insulated
Produce potable hot water
Have one or two electric elements and all associated controllers
Cheap and big

All it needs is the appropriate TC ferrule

If I'm the first to have suggested this, I request we call it a "Nobay" ;-)

I think I read something here on the forum but I don't remember the post. Any boiler of suitable material can be used for distillation, there are several posts in which containers of all kinds have been used with the necessary changes. I also thought about it but here where I live the water heaters are not stainless steel but of iron with a treatment so I gave up.

Getcha’ an old car radiator to use as a condenser and you’ll have a setup right out of the 1930’s (Prohibition Era).

Check that there is no leaded solder in it.

I did this once, abandoned that project first time it came time to clean it.

Good luck.
