using pot still as pressure canner

Post by Hilltop »

Anybody tried that? Temps have to reach 240, which I believe I can do. My small still is actually an old copper double boiler

I don't know that putting a still under pressure is a particularly good idea, they are usually built to be able to withstand atmosphere, not pressure.

If you are planning on making a bomb, of course this would be a good way to go about it, although, you may find yourself in the Darwin Awards for it.

I don't like the sound of superheating water to 240 dF in a vessel not designed specifically as a pressure vessel, but you will need to know what pressure exactly you are going to generate and obtain a "Blow off valve" set to that pressure (like the weights on a "Proper" pressure cooker)

Before you do though, get hold of a "pan-tylpe " PC and bring it up to 15 psi, then lift the weights off and see what a leak would look like

Don't do it! A decent pressure cooker does not cost that much. They can be found used at garage sales for pennies on the dollar.

this is bad advise  dumping a pressure cooker at full pressure (pulling the weight) is

at the very least dangerous.

Would you care to expand on that? Is there something to be concerned about other than the scalding jet of steam that will come from the vent when the weight is lifted?

Not a good idea .Ya take the pressure off in some canning pot with food in it could cause food to blow through with steam .If your canning in glass jars breakage and again spewing steam and possibly food.If it happens and was heated unnoticed stopped up ya have a bomb . Moving to what not to do and locking.
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper
