Gin Basket

Post by sltm1 »

Would a piece of a woman's stocking suspended in a thumper (lengthwise) be a good one use gin basket?

No, today's synthetic stuff. I'm looking for a way to have more surface area for more intense flavor before proofing it down.

Speaking for myself: I would never use any synthetic fabric in the still! Especially not with such a large exposed surface.
Pure cotton or linen, not wool or silk.
Metals like copper or ss or, if need be, even iron.
Maybe a skein of copper or ss wire at the bottom of the column.

Reading again: why not putting the stuff loose in a thumper? Or in a ss teabasket?

This had to be moved anyway, might as well be here. Sorry my floyd fan, no synthetics anywhere. Nylon was bad enough, any synthetics is a no go. There are other solutions that are in our core beliefs.

I couldn't find any reference to a nylon stocking in the "what not to use" section. I tried a tea basket, but didn't get enough infusion, plus I wanted to keep the dust sizes particles out of the liquid. I also tried directly into the thumper liquid, but again too little flavor. I think I'll order a piece of the finest mesh ss screen I can find then make a copper stand for it to place directly over my bubbler tube on the bottom of the thumper. Oh by the way....which one's Pink? (just for you Shineon)

hmm I would avoid any synthetic unless it's a material known for ethanol and other organics resistance. Don't forget, you're dealing with a bit of acetone, methanol, various higher alcohols...all sorts of powerful organic solvents.

You could go with a cotton bag (from a brewer's supply or home-made)... or there have been many posts in HD Forums about people using things like fashioning "bags" made from copper mesh, etc.
