Another herbalist I know was telling me that she had family living down in an area of new Mexico Nick named "candy kitchen" which apparently has a prohibition era moon shining history. I was a little suprised my home state had any history in that department:

I'd love to find out what recipe they were using to make their product!

Everything I'm reading about Candy Kitchen indicates it was just sugar shine.
I doubt there was any grain being procured in that barren land. What I can't find,
is how and when the operation was discovered.

While I dont know a whole lot about that area except for when work sent me to Gallup and Grant's, up north brandy's have been distilled for years mostly from choke cherry wine. Somewhere in an old recipe book I have one that used pinon nut as an ingredient for distilling also. New Mexico is also home to the very first vineyards in North America
Re: New Mexico moonshine: the candy kitchen
Well that's a good possibility Bvritr, since they were making Piñon Nut candy at the Kitchen.
Maybe they were shining it too. Good catch.

And now that I think about it more.... corn and different squashes were a staple of the native diet in the region for centuries. Yes its desert but the soil is super rich as it was a lava flow from the Velles Caldera.

Yeah, they were making sugar shine but I wonder about the other ingredients. Corn is a possible candidate as it is cultivated here....
