Possible 2017 S3 Home Distiller rendezvous at my home

Post by FreeMountainHermit »

Just started kicking this around and looking for input from the board.

Central WV roughly 90 minutes south of TBs home. Date to be set by the guys and gals here as everyday is Friday for me.

Tons of camping available on the property so let me know your needs if any.

Welcome to my humble home if you or yours care to come and visit.

Apologies for being so brief but at this point I'm just kickin' the tires to see where it might go. Hope it comes to fruition as the folks I've met from 2 other S3 shindigs have been just super nice folks.

Y'all give yourselves a big pat on the back for me !

That's roughly 3 hours from the house. Very doable. I need to get something special made and aging then.

Would love to mate, but unless I get a windfall from the lotto or some dead unknown relation I'm unlikely to attend any such gatherings.

FMH:

I'll make my annual suggestion that we incorporate a learning agenda into some part of the weekend which might assist some of us in advancing our craft. If there's concern about attendees, then we can could filter based on known to host, well known on HD, prior year attendee, etc.

Some topics suggestions:
  • making good cuts (practice makes perfect here)
exercise to discriminate (recognize) Heads taste and Tails taste
Demo a full all-grain mash cooking with enzymes (from cold water to pitch)
    making a coil
operating a Nixon-Stone Offset reflux head properly
    managing coolant flow temperature
    operating a dephlegmator properly
demo'ing / running a plated column - keeping it loaded, flooding
    operating a TIG welder
This may add some variety to the hours of sampling proferred wares.
It'll take some work in planning this type of agenda but the benefits seem obvious.

Thoughts.

To people that are considering going but thinking it's too far......I'm on the west coast, and going to these meet and greets are special memories. To put faces to the people you talk to every day, to taste their spirits... It's worth every penny to me. I've said it many times..... If there's any way you can make one of these DO IT!!!!!!

I want to add to what Bigbob just posted . Another thing that people remark about is the quality and behavior of the folks you meet at these events . Quiet , professional people with a common interest .
These gatherings are not drunken redneck mudbogs . Nothin wrong with them . This is just a different venue .

Bob, I'm told that Central West Virginia Airport offers many connections. South of Pittsburgh but right up the road from the house a bit.

Hope this helps as I'm not well versed in airline connections.

You could get shuttle flights from Pittsburgh that would get a little closer . Not sure they are worth it . When SOH and her friend went to PNW a few weeks back they found it easier to use Pittsburgh directly rather than shuttling .
If this happens and you can make it you can find my place . We can get there from here .

I'm saying this in good spirits and ragging you in no way . Fact remains that when Croweater and Suzie Dundee showed up at my place they proved us all pikers for saying some place is too far .

Your right TB. I spoke to your wife about her concerns of having alot of random people on the property with a lot of booze. We drank great spirits until the late night hours with zero shenanigans and zero hang overs  . thanks to your wife, those buiscuts and gravy were a great start to the day after a long night of boozin it up

here is some potential motivation, youll get to put your name on the liars bench!

That picture is so special to us . If we can make the next gathering I promise to bring that bench and a wood burner so everybody can sign in again . Beans , biscuits , and gravy might also be doable . Gonna put down a mess of beef and pork in the next couple of weeks for dried beef and Canadian bacon .
The 'Bench' holds a place of honor in our living/dining room . Only those who were here know how special it is .
