What's everyone's mash steam injector look like

Post by Getsmokin »

What's everyone's mash steam injector look like? I built an injector with an eductor and can't get enough vapor speed to make it work correctly.

It isn't very sexy but this has worked the best of all the different designs I've tried
It's made out of some SS braid removed from a hose

For cooking or stripping? I steam strip and it’s just a straight 3/4” pipe with 42 1-16” perforations in the bottom 6”. End is loosely crimped not capped. I use a dual thread triclamp fitting to go through the keg wall. Hose between steam boiler and injector arm/pipe.

I guess I need adjust the comments on my eductor. It actually works very well until the mass gets to 180-190f, then it won't circulate through the Venturi.

You need to post a picture of yours. If it works at the low PSI/vapor speed we use I'll be making one. The standard eductors I have seen need big PSI/vapor speed to stir. Help us out. :)

That's plenty warm for mashing
I gave up on my eductors experiments

I have only done water testing so far.. so the jury's still out. But would imagine with a change of orifice size it would still work regardless.

Not ready to scrap the hole concept just yet. Care to share some of your failures?

Perhaps the eductor stops mixing because the corn has begun to gelatinize, therefore becoming too thick. It seems an addition of pre-malt or high temp enzymes should keep things moving.

What size is the steam opening on your educator? Is this DIY or a commercially available?

See above. Just testing with water so far. Have to look, think about a 3/4 orifice.

Please don't give it up. That wasn't implied at all. I had hoped you found a way to push mud. So far for mud movement no win yet.

Got ya. I was thrown off by the "mass" part

I guess the worst case is go to the single infusion method, At least I have great water heating/ circulation. More testing to come....

Sebstar htl will fix your gelatinization issues and convert most of your starches, if you’re a traditionalist there’s a product called sebflo that is intended to keep mash loose as you’re heating (you should double check active temp range), it may still convert some starches but it may leave a bunch behind for your malt to convert.

I literally just use the steam wand from my thumper.

Planning on building something more efficient soon, so I don't have to stir as often. But this works.

Normally I "cook" up the corn is a modified 1/2 keg, but can cook smaller batches in something like this 5 gallon stainless pot.

These photos are of the cleaning run on the wand, since it had just been modified.

This setup is to "cook" the corn out of the 2nd boiler (Thumper) apologies for the poor photo

Been using this setup for a couple years...

Off subject of the steam.
Cool thing is after the corn is cooked and yeast is added, remove the wand, throw the lid on and call it a fermentor, and let the mash ferment out. After fermentation is finished, reattach the wand and then distill on the grain All from one vessel :)

Just need the add the column and condenser.
