Keg

Post by big_turbo_diesel »

Hey Guys
I have enjoyed reading and learning from your many posts
I am currently finishing my still from plans at building a home distilling apparatus. the plans build a reflux colum still with a water jacket condensor. :) I have a keg that I want to use as the boiler but i dont know if it is stainless or aluminum. :?: Any way to tell? I hope to use a stainless steel bowl to attach the colum to the boiler.
I am also looking for copper mesh to hold the packing in. will the local hardware store have it?
And how do I post a picture?
Thanks BTD

A magnet should stick to stainless steel and fall off aluminium.

And you can also use th scratch test. Try to scratch the keg with a sharp metal object. Aluminum should scratch fairly easily, stainless not at all.

A magnet will not stick to stainless steel or aluminum. Beer kegs here in Canada are stainless. You should be able to tell just by the weight alone. Aluminum is light, stainless is much heavier.

My keg is SS and a magnet will stick to it, just not very well. A strong magnet would be best for this test.

Also you could try eating it and seeing if you get Alzheimers.

If a magnet sticks to stainless it is a cheap type stainless. Food grade stainless is nonmagnetic.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, and them's pretty good odds.
