I just ran a sexond run for the first time and got back a gallon from a gallon and a half of "first run". Is that normal?
Am I supposed to get more flavor the more runs I do? Doesn't seem like it. Seems like I jest got more alky, which is fine by me.
I took a strong whiff of the first 200 ml that was in that jar. Wish I hadn't.

I used two washes together that came out to a gallon and a half - one half was a sugar/brown sugar wash and the other half was a strawberry wine gone bad wash. But wharever I make comes out like vodka to me.Rocky_Creek wrote:Not sure what you are making or what came before. But for a second distillation, lots of folks cut that first part. Either fore shots or heads for recycling.

I have a still spirits pot still. I read all this on the site, but Jesse mentions something about getting more flavor from a second run so it threw me off.Brett wrote:what still do u have pot or reflux?
generally
pot = flavours
reflux = neutral spirit vodka
u can detune the reflux to make a more flavoured spririt but generally better with a pot still
all this is on the homedistiller.org site

What Brett said re: second ferment, although I'll add that a second run can concentrate flavors in the heads and tails of a whiskey or rum run. But the middle of the run will be higher proof and have less flavor than the middle of the previous run.
Lord preserve and protect us, we've been drinkin' whiskey 'fore breakfast.
