Here's an easy molasses based rum recipe that I successfully used for my first fermentation. I got the recipe from another thread:
1 gallon molasses
5 lbs sugar
Dissolve these in a gallon of boiling water in your fermenter.
Fill to 5 gallons with cold water.
When the temp is below 70F, add your yeast. I used 20g Lalvin EC-1118, but you can use whatever you want. Keep the temp as close to 70F as possible and a week later your will have your molasses beer.
Making a still isn't really that hard. I got all the parts I needed and put mine together in an afternoon. Make a pot still with a worm condensor for your first still, they are quite simple. Basically all you need is a pot, some copper pipe, and a bucket. Look at the section on making pot stills on homedistiller.org again and study the pics. The pics helped me more than anything. Then just go for it! Practice really is a better teacher than anything. Good luck.
Cheers,
J
