Here's link I found today, from 2004. Seems we could already be on the way to energy independence. If we could get the politicians onboard, get things moving, maybe when everyone is making their own fuel-ethanol, they'll see that it's ridiculous to prohibit making a little for personal consumption!
Re: the hydrogen/methanol thread, I haven't read the journal article yet, but it should work for methanol, too.

Hydrogen fuel seems to be the scientific flavour of the week. Hydrogen fuel has a great power to weight ratio, but a lousy power to volume ratio, hence it makes a great fuel for sending rockets into space, but not a great fuel for cars. It seems counterproductive to turn a dense fuel into a less dense fuel.

Thanks chemist,neat article.
I have long belived, that with the correct political and economical will, the energy problems of USA are solvable.
If USA can implement the Manhattin project, then with enough incentive, Hydrogen to helium fusion should be achievable.
Ethanol and other bio fuels seem a great way to revive the agricultural scene that has taken so many hard hits in the last decade or two.
