When built my first still, I used a piece of what was supposed to be a lab grade plastic tubing on the output. It turned milky after the first run. I replaced it with a copper tube soon after. High alcohol, heat and plastic don't mix, even if it's food grade... ethanol is not food. I would use something else if I were you...ie copper, stainless, glass.

All the pictures of "parrot's beaks" look like a vertical tube with a cap on the bottom and a reducing coupler on top. Then an entry hole near the bottom and an exit hole near the top.

What would be wrong with making one out of a 12" piece of 3/4 copper pipe and a cap? What's the point of that reducing coupler?

You sure got a lot of plastic tubing on your stills for vapour and condensate transfer. :?

The 3/4" or whatever is all the way through to the top of the reducer. The alcohol is overflowing into that gap in between the center pipe and the reducer. I figure this is so you can take an accurate measurement from the surface of the liquid. It then goes out of the tube at the bottom of the reducer into the collection jar.

BTW This is not my picture. I found it on a different thread. I re posted it just to take a stab at explaining the purpose of the reducer.

Actually the plastic pipe im using is "Surgical Grade" not food grade, Maybe surgical grade pipe is made to use with various chemicals, I've not had any problems.

Old thread revisited,
Just thought I'd show my new addition to the family, she's not the prettiest but she'll work!
