subject: Over- oaked solutions desired

I'm sure I'm a victim of my own making. My whisky is a beautiful color, tates pretty good, but I have some tingly, tannic sensations on the insides of my lips when I'm a sippin my stuff. I used oak cubes- extra toast, about 15 of them for about 4 weeks in a gallon of whisky.
Can I make it less so? tone the oak tannins down? Or am I ordered to dilute it and re-distill as my only recourse?

Help

let it sit for a while. it will calm down. also aerate it some.

I would only redistill part of it and then blend it back in if you went that route.

The wood puts too much tannins in and therefore makes the lips tingle, really? I keep learnin' stuff here. Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks, to everybody
I'll be patient- It does seem to be calming down , and as far as aereation, I have poured it back and forth from a gallon jug to a pitcher a couple of times. Is that as good as any method ? Or do I really need to get a fish tank aereation block? Does it reallly make enough difference to justify it ? I'm all over it if it is , but I'm sometimes cynical about equipment. I don't use something or buy new stuff unless you " authorities" on the subject all sign off on it- Well almost....

refluxinator,
I'm new , but even the wines I've made for years all grab, Color, and tannin( astringincy) from oak. Other stuff too like vamillins, and carmel flavors as you change the proof you are aging with the oak. As far as the mouth sensation, I detected a tightness around the inside edges of my mouth. Like a pucker only felt on the inside. This is tannic acid. It acts as a preservative in wine. It also counteracts the sweetmess in some wines to give the " balance" you hear people describe. Acidity makes things more " thirst quenching in the wine world. It gives a crisp acidic edge or finish to liquids.
Ok - stick a fork in me - I'm done- over done- out of here.

Thank you, it does explain a little bit. I'm curious about the effects/sensations. I can't honestly say I've experienced it. I'll keep reading around.

I had two of those aeration blocks disintegrate in my distillate while trying to aerate, what a mess, thought the first one was a fluke so I had to try again. Now I just use a piece of copper tubing and blow through it, or hook it up my pump.

That's not good. You dissolved the glue that held the block together and it's now in your liquor. I hate to say it, but I think redistillation may be in order.

yeah, if you want to aerate distillate you need a stainless steel aeration stone.

Do you know where I can get one online?

Me too, Me too.
P.S. I assume you run them with a fish tank air pump?
PP.SS. Is there a rule of thumb about how long you run them ? I am happy to check every 15 minutes or so, I just want a ball park idea of effectiveness. An hour or a day?

Thanks 4WA

If you go to the Homebrew Heaven website, they have a Distilling Supplies section, but the aeration equipment is either under Brewing Equipment or Brewing accesories, or similar.

They have an aeration assembly that takes one of the "Benz-o-Matic" Oxygen bottles and provides pure oxygen to your wort / wash / must. It comes with a stainless stone as well as a regulator and line for the Oxygen bottle.

I'm getting the assembly, but when I called down there they said they carried just the sintered stainless stones for somewhere around $14 - $17 US. They're in Everett , Washington here in the USA but have an online web store.

I think just a copper line immersed in your hooch with some source of clean compressed air, like an aquarium pump will do the trick. An aeration stone would be faster, but I don't think we are pressed for time.

whatever you do don't try to bubble pure oxygen through distillate unless you have a hankering to be incinerated along with your house, its contents and anyone inside at the time of the explosion.

Re: Over- oaked solutions desired [re: Fourway]

Here's my solution. Might be a little cheaper. Hook the aquarium pump up to a piece of 1/4 inch diameter copper tubing and then wrapping a little copper scrubber around the other end of the copper tubing. Hold it in place with a stainless steel clamp from the hardware store.
