Recipie help for first run needed.

Post by Jaxom »

I've read and re-read the wash section on the website, and I think I need a bit of a help for the first time out. It seems that most of the recipies are for 20L (5 gallons), and the nessary sugar for a simple wash. Being new at this and all, will I be able to get the water and required about of sugar in a 6.5 gallon carboy? I've looked around for a larger bucket that has a good seal, but they all seem loose fitting. Don't want any nasties getting into the wash!

hey

now I'm not sure whether these are US or UK gallons, but 6.5 gallons is about 25 or 30 litres, so yes, it should be fine.
I did a turbo was, 21 L, 8 kg of sugar, in a 27.5 L carboy. totalled about 25L

Think I need to take a step back for a moment here. The carboy I have is 6.5 US gallons or 5 gallons imperial, or 24.6L. Just how much head space should I allow for in the carboy. I took another look at the wash page on the website. And the converter there is for total volume (sugar and water combined).

It be really nice if I could take this up to 6 US gallons leaving a half gallon of head space. That way I could get the most out of my first batch.

are you using a bubbler? if so then i wouldnt put in more than 5.5 gallons US. if you have a top with a tube going to an external container of water, then you can put in more but you gotta expect quite a bit of foam to escape.

i put 5 gallons into a 6.5 gallon carboy for fermentation. if it's a beer then i xfer it to a 5 gallon carboy after primary fermentation for secondary fermentation and dry hop if required.

A couple turns of duct tape will seal a loose lid.

My two cents (US)

First cent, I use a 6.5 gallon carboy to make 25 liter plain sugar washes and there's plenty of room.

Second cent, with a plain sugar wash and Prestige 8Kg Turbo yeast I've never had any foaming.

Hope this helps

I probably should have mentioned, I'm looking to use that Lavin champagne yeast. Being my first run and all, I think I'll take Jesse's advice and make the wash smaller the first time out. Not withstanding, where I live I cannot get the turbo yeasts.

I also wanted to ask about the hydrometer I bought. I know it's a beer hydrometer, do I still need a different one as mentioned on the website? I noticed Brewhaus has two, one with larger printing, is having one of these worth it? Also, this hydrometer only measures to 10% alchohol, I should probably get an alcholmeter then in additon to a better hydrometer?

I'm also wondering, since this will be my first run, should I do two runs. One fast and the second slow? Or should I just run once? If I only run once, should I filter the distilate through carbon?
