New rig

Post by Swag »

I finally got my new column put together. I haven’t shined it up the outside yet but the inside is clean. I used a piece of 3” pipe I picked up at the scrap yard and cannibalized some of my other stills to make this rig.
I’m using an institutional stainless beverage container for a boiler. It was fully insulated when I got it so I cut the bottom off and removed the insulation to reveal the inner container. The sides and top are still insulated which keeps everything inside nice and hot through the run. The top is a latching type cap which lent itself very nicely to my purposes.
The 3” pipe had an inch and a half reducer coming off a tee so I used that for a stripping output that accommodates my Leibig condenser.
I calculated the volume of a 3” stack compared to a 2” stack of the same height (50”).
3”= 1414 cu in
2”= 628 cu in
More than twice the volume gives me the option of running much more heat for the same amount of vapor speed (theoretically). I have yet to run a wash through it so we will have to see how well that plays out.
