Latest Batch RHUM

Post by Don Ventura »

Okay so its been FOUR friggin weeks now that I have been waiting for this rum wash to be ready.

Background:
4G H20
Gert Strand 48hr Alcotec Turbo yeast
3# Medium Cane Molasses (Unsulfered Brear Rabbit brand)
3# C&H Regular Brown Sugar
10# Dextrose (corn sugar)

Cooked 2.5G with sugar mix for 90 min untill nice and foamy, dumped it in the fermenter and topped off with remaining water into my 5G bucket. Waited for the temp to come down and pitched in a full sachet of 48hrTurbo. Starting SG was 1100.
Day one... nothing
Day two... bubble bubble
Week one... SHIT ITS FOAMING OUT THE SIDES OF THE AIRLOCK STOPPER!!!
Week Two... okay normal bubles
Week Three... Are you done YET?
Week Four...Okay Stopped - PHEW!!

SG test and Im way below 990, where my scale cuts off... Yeah I need a new one. Figure its about 980 and that means about 16.5% abv. Not too shabby. Taste is bad beer, very carbonated though, no sweetness at all so thats good, But cloudy as hell... BAH a few more days to let it settle.

So here's the thing: I'm thinking about setting some fire to it on my weekend to see if it will sing but I cant decide if I want to do a pot still run or a partial reflux in Fatman. Little boy is still not ready(waiting on parts and payday). I mean I have feeling that its not going to be the greatest rum to begin with and I will probably be so disapointed that I will just end up running it again and using it for engine parts stripper, but in the event that it IS good... well I want to at least give it the most love I can.

Anyway, what do you think? 2 post still runs or just do a partial reflux run and see what I get?

I would do the pot.

P.S. I had good results with crosby distillers yeast, 1 lb cost @$6, has about 22%abv tolerance. I still had to leave some space for the foam. Molasssis has loads of nutrients, you probably don't need the expensive turbos, but if it works and you like it...

I distilled twice in a pot and set on Oak for a month and it's better than any crap in the store. In my uninformed opinion. 8)

I'm using my potstill for almost everything now. I thought I would be using the column more, but it's been just the opposite.
I love my little potstill. :D

Yea, everclear grain alcohol can be had in stores in many states.
But for custom made whiskeys and brandies and bourbons and such, the potstill is the king kettle.
