My local traderhorn is selling old whiskey barrels that are cut in half width wise. (you can still smell the whiskey in them)
I'm wondering if any of you have any good uses I could do with them because I could probably get a couple for free.
If I made a top for them would they be good fermenters? I figure they are oak, can't tell for sure though. No plugs either.

Take the wood staves. Cut them into pieces that will fit into whatever container you are storing your hooch in. Toast or char to your liking. Add to your jar of hooch. Wait as long as you can. Enjoy.
I think possum or pothead said it best though. Putting oak on neutral spirits is like oak flavored vodka. So true.
The rum can be really nice if you wait 2 months. I did the neutral and oak thing, thought it was great at first but am now working on a real whiskey.
Good Luck.

You bring the fair maidens, I'll bring the panty-remover.

I don't want the top closed, I only make sour mash and want the air-borne yeast to get in, I just cover mine with screen wire to keep flys and such out but my mash can still get outside air.Griff7887 wrote:How do you close the top?golden pond wrote:They do make good mash containers. I use them for that.
Never follow good whiskey with water, unless you're out of good whiskey!!!
