Malt Extract Based Whiskey

Post by JimmyJazz »

Hi all,

I was just wondering about the effectiveness of using powdered malt extract (or liquid) such as used in home-brewing beer to make a wash for whiskey? I know from homebrewing you dont always get the freshest flavours from extract but i dont own mashing equipment as yet and was wondering if its a possible path to head down for home distilling. Ive had a look at uncle jessies sourmash which looks like it could be effective but i dont have the need for such a volume of liquor constantly nor the money to sink into an ongoing process. Im looking for something similar to Jamesons, and any recipies would be much appreciated.

I have a Still Spirits Super Reflux still which i recently aquired and im lead to beleive that 1/3 ~ 1/2 packing (cermanic saddles) would be fine for using to distill whiskey. The still puts out about 86% ABV at its peak.

Thanks in advance,

For beer brewing as I don't have a full scale mash tun I use malt extract for the bulk and do a small mash using one or two 1 gal stock pots and a large sieve. Using some real malt gives a bit more flexibility and a fresher flavour.
