sunlight damage

Post by rangaz »

started drinking a new batch of ginger beer today. they were left fermenting in the bottle out in the sun to keep them warmer. the ones in dark bottles taste fine but the clear bottles have got an extra taste to them. it isnt severe and they are still very drinkable but i thought maybe it was something to do with the extra light because i remember reading somewhere that beer shouldnt be left in clear bottles in sunlight.

yeh, unfortunately my dad drinks Hahn or Tooheys and me and my mates all drink Tooheys, so i dont have many dark bottles. Do you know what is actually happening to produce that flavour?

Specifically it's the hop oils that turn "skunky" when exposed to sunlight... brown glass will protect from this and green glass will not.

You didn't have any hops in yer ginger beer (I hope...heh) so this shouldn't be a problem, but I admit to havin' booze taste funny occasionally when left in the sun, but I have no idea what causes it.

I have told people time and time again......... It does not take that much heat to ferment.

65-75 degrees F.

Yeast THRIVES at these temps.

its currently 70 and the bottles arent producing any bubbles. once i place one next to a halogen lamp for a little while, the bubbles start coming out like crazy

Why on earth do you want your bottles to "produce bubbles"? Is this with the caps on or off?

yeh, ive just covered the tops with plastic. I learnt the lesson about capping the bottles at the start already. I found glass bits scattered 10m each direction
