pre oaking possible?

Post by dutch@home »

i'm making small batches and saving up for a second (whiskey) run.
would it be possible or have effect putting some oak into my collection bottle?
i read its best whith higher %alc.
should some off the oak flavour stay after the second run?
just a (stupid?)thought....

My guess is that only a very small amount of the oak flavoring and none of the color would come over on the second run and that it wouldn't be worth it to pre-soak. It wouldn't hurt to try it and see what happens though.

I just did that with my last run, I had 19 litres of 40% ABV and I had oak soaking in it for a few months. I just distilled last week and none of the flavour came through. I was stripping it to 90%. If you used a pot still you might be able to get some of the oak flavour.

I believe the only noticeable result will be the loss of alcohol in to the oak.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, and them's pretty good odds.
