Immersion Heater Element

Post by kingo102 »

Hi guys,

I've been using the 1000W heater element that comes with sill spirits kits in Australia for my keg boiler. Works great - that is until after 4 or so runs it trips the powerboard (RCD). On inspection it seems the wash corrodes the element and causes it to short. The pH of the wash is typically 4.5-5.0.

Rather than replacing it every 3 runs (expensive), I'm wondering has anyone here in Aus managed to find a 1000W or thereabouts (240V) stainless screw in immersion heater?

Cheers,
Daev

Is it an actual short, (burnt element). I've found circuit breakers wear out after so many years or trips, and a 25 amp breaker will trip with a 15 amp load, or the beginning load, which is sometimes higher. Just a thought to check on.

You would be better off looking for a 4500 watt low density element and running it on 120 volts, this would give you 1100 watts and would last for ever running on 120 V.

I've had good luck with the cheap hot water heater elements from the local hardware store. They are designed for 120V at 1500 watts. My current set has lasted over two years. Here they are about $7 each.

Hey, fellas, this dude is from Australia, they don't have 120V, they use 240V as standard. With regards to your element problem, you could order one from either Still Spirits or Spirits Unlimited in NZ - they both export to Australia so their stainless elements will be of the correct specification.
Never do tomorrow what you can do today because if you like what you do today you can do it AGAIN tomorrow!

ahh yes is 240V here, and you will get a tickle if you touch the wrong cable! I was using what I thought was a spirits unlimited element, except it was copper. Do you know where I can grab a stainless version??

BTW just came back from the States and had an absolute ball. NY was so cool, would love to go back.
