chitosan clearing

Post by praefect »

Hi Guys,

I'm new here, I'm trying to get back into the hobby after 15+ years since I last used a still...

I bough a pack of SuperYeast at my local wine shop, it comes with a chitosan clearing solution, should I use it or not?

I know distiller's yeast clears less than other yeast but I plan to make vodka out of the first few batches so am I better not use the clearing solution or what?

A search for superyeast on this forum gets one hit, someone complaining about his rum having a strong yeast smell.. I prefer a yeast smell than a shellfish smell (chitosan is made from shellfish).

Anyway that's it for now, I still have a ton of readind to do while waiting for the still to be delivered.

thanks

By the way, I'm trying to find better yurbo yeast here in QC, Canada if anyone care to help...

praefect,
I havn't used the yeast that you mention, or the "chitanous" clearing agent that was included.

I can recomend Crosby and Baker Superstarter Distillers yeast, it is available in the US for @ $7US for a US lb aprox 1/2kilo. It gives pretty fast ferment, clears well, little or no off flavors. Sorry I can't tell you where to buy it in Canada, but maybe a delivery via internet.
Hey guys!!! Watch this.... OUCH!

The chitosan wont leave a shellfish flavor, and is ok to use, unless your alergic to shellfish.I dont know if the stuff that triggers an alergic reaction will carry over,in the distillate.Im allergic to shellfish,so i havent tryed it.
