Are forum members getting more aggresive?

Post by CoopsOz »

Hey all, am I just being a little too sensitive or is this place getting a little more aggressive than normal? Not that I care either way it just seems to be changing a bit.

BTW....have a nice day ya F@%kers! :D :D :D

I don't think that the regulars are getting more aggressive, but it does seem that a couple of newcomers and guests have been pretty touchy and aggressive.

I hope it's not a trend, but rather a blip.

That said, it does seem that the world is going to hell in a handbasket generally. In the real world, aggression is increasing (even where I live -- outside a small, safe city in a small safe country) noticeably. The amount of rage out there is getting kind of scary... so I wouldn't be suprised if that agression and rage found its way here too. :(

Maybe it's not such good idea to post messages after testing your product

I will say that I'm surprised how well folks get along given we all have different ideas, equipment, and recipes. I don't hear too many people claiming that their particular method is "the best". My guess is we're all making better 'shine than the big boys and learning heaps on the way.

Any trouble makers seem to move on pretty quickly anyway.

I blame it mostly on the recent increase in newbies to the forums, which makes the regulars a bit more exasperated when 3 newbs ask the same uneducated question in 3 different threads, when the same question was answered less than a week ago.

UJ said in this thread: http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5027 that search engines are directing more people here than they did in the past.

I think its the lack of trying to help ones self... asking the the same questions that have been answered many times over.... rather than spending some time trying to read a little and understand how things work ,instead of asking to be spoon fed we all started out learning .. Im still there for that matter .. But I do read everything i can find on a subject before asking a question. Like some of the stuff I see alot can I use plastic In my still ..sure ya can If you want to kill ya dumb ass self or someone else ..that question would never get asked if the parent site was read .I think little things like this kinda piss off the people that have spent the time to read and learn and practice what they have learned .So suggestion someone to read the parent site is pointing them to alot more info than alot really know is there ...thats just my take on it .

Anytime I see one of those newbie questions like "Wash fermenting?", "water connection", "I can't find...". etc. I just pass right over it and don't even open that thread. I think most basic questions are answered in the home site and in previous threads. New threads and questions are about developing and furthering the hobby or one's practices to a new level.

I think the source of any so called "aggressive" remarks from people comes from a sense of pride in their still, their product, and the work they put into building their still. As long as the still is made from non-toxic materials, we should all just accept that everyone here thinks their still is the best. We should focus on exchanging ideas that we can incorporate into our stills, not forcing/scaring the other person into doing "our way" and all that other stuff we all learned in kindergarden :)

Besides, all the blokes here give the good oil to all the drongos who come into this shivoo with little aggro. Those who get a little shirty and knock the good oil they are given are just mug lairs who go berko and do their nana when given fair dinkum advice.

I much prefer the bandicoot simile

To me that sounds a little more poetic, but I guess that is simply because I have heard the headless chicken simile just way too much :) The new one is simply more fresh to me

I moderate a forum (don't know if it's kosher to plug it...we don't let people...but you can find a link in the memberlist...drop on by, we'll baptize the gumbo...), and have noticed a similar trend. We've even set up 'unmoderated' rooms where people can vent!

Look out, don't lose your head then lose your gal
You can't lose a broken heart
If you ever break up, then try to make up
It's tough to make a brand new start.

Weigh your remarks before you speak or you may be sorry soon.
Don't be erratic; be diplomatic to keep your hearts in tune.
Cruel, harsh words often spoken will upset your apple cart
So don't lose your head then lose your gal
'Cause you can't lose a broken heart.

I am new to the form and been reading a bunch and learning to. I been brewing beer and making wine for about 17 years now and I am excited to start my new adventure in distilling. I been very careful about asking questions on the forum and always looking for the answers. I know it is a pain in the back side to have post after post of the same simple questions and everyone on hear says what a great search the sight has..

With saying that I have done a lot of searches for topics I want to learn about but I must be doing something wrong.. When I search for something like "Spiced Rum" I come up with a lot if post that have nothing to do with spiced rum. So am I doing something wrong? When I can not find what I need I am afraid to ask because I seen how some others get spanked..

I am not trying to make any enemies just friends because I like this forum.

Thank you

I don't use the search feature much, so I assume it works properly but I can't really say.

Anyone else have problems with the search feature? Does it return false hits?

I think it just depends on what you are looking for. Sometimes you do get a search liked the "spiced rum" one where you get a ton of threads that the word "spiced rum" was just said or mentioned maybe once in the whole thread. I don't know much about computers and stuff but maybe adding an option where you can search for relevance might help you find what you are looking for faster. You know like where the threads that mention the word or phrase the most, appear first.

Just my two cents.

Sure does. The problem seems to be that if you do a search for a specific phrase using quotations marks (ie "spiced rum"), it actually gives the results for an 'OR' search (spiced OR rum) instead. So you get everything with 'spiced' or 'rum', which increases the number of results by orders of magnitude, most of them irrelevant. Sometimes I have got 20-30 pages of results, which is clearly ridiculous.

It is probably why newbies often seem to ask dumb questions, cause most searches give way too much to read through.

It uses standard PHP query protocol.
If one wanted to search for say... "Stainless Steel Half Couplers", It would return every thread that mentioned: stainless, steel, half, and coupler. Thats about 1400+ hits. One must refine the standard search to search for exact, or only, not and. I can see how this could discourage a forums noob from searching.
This is standard for forums..... But it does not excuse stupid questions.

But, stupid questions do not excuse hostile or rude answers. If you dont like a question, or post, you have the right to ignore it.

Just my 2cents.

Got the solution for this searching problem.

I tried "spiced rum" as an example here. Marking the first button after the keyword blank (search for any terms or use query as entered [the default choice]) returns 781 matches, the top only mentioning "rum", not "spiced rum". Marking the second bullet (search for all terms) reduces this to 33, and they're much better hits. This button does the same thing as if you had placed AND between every term.

Adding AND between the terms is explained off to the side, so it's just a matter of not paying attention.

I have a feeling that your post might be based on some banter that went on with me and a newb concening backset. Someone later in this thread mentioned refraining from sampling our product when posting. This may be advisable as that has typically been when I've made an ass of myself  .
Do I care? Not really, I have admited the times that I may had read something wrong and and asked for forgiveness from the offeneded party. If they don't forgive SFW. Do I care if everyone on here likes me? It would be nice, but it aint gonna break my heart. Hell theres some on here that I figure I dont like. But, if I think I can help them I will try.

I've been makin good product for myself going on 3 years and never even found this forum till I already had 6 runs under my belt.

I can say when I joined this forum there was alot less sensitivity, It was more like going to a mens club where you drank, bullshitted, screwed with your buddies, and generally just had a good time. Not sure where that went, but here we are now.

So in the future if ya see that I or anyone for that matter is confused on a topic bring it to my/their attention.

Hell we all have a drink on here, that I am sure of, except maybe Stoker,
so lets have some fun with it.

But I do get tired of the LAZYNESS.
If it was easy everybody would do it.

To be perfectly honest, that's how I treat the forum. Aussies do this all the time when with a group of mates. If we can't have fun while learning, what exactly is the point of the forum? If someone chucks a wobbly, it's they who miss out on the camaraderie.

so i'm tole :)

You could have 'So they reckon', B/D.

More aussie, and it can be allllll yours

Ps. I'm not aggresive, just intolerant, blunt, guileless, non respectfull of authority and sometimes brutally, naively honest.
Combine that with a casual arrogance and a nonchalance to others opinions of me, and makes me someone who can be frustrating, enraging, moody and high maintenance.

But i'll tell ya the truth, listen to wisdom, and apologise when i'm wrong.

I always say please too
