Jezus, they're even regulating Iodine now? First, they all but took pseudoephedrine off the market, now tincture of iodine. What's next, are they going to regulate acetone or hydrogen peroxide because of bomb makers?

Yairrrs, I can't get iodine either. Talk about paranoia!!!!
I ended up getting some stuff which contains 10% povidone - iodine equiv to 1% iodine. I'll try it but don't expect it to be any value unless I cut my wrists from political frustration.
Why do we vote for the fools who make these laws????

Another chemical which is banned here cos it can be used to make a bomb is Condy's crystals.

I bought tincture of iodine last month and used it Sat.. Maybe, I will get another botlle or 5 to have in case. I'm an old timer, and iodine and merthiolate are the topical medications i swear by. Love to watch people squirm. As tjhe old doctors of note used to say, the worst it tasted, the more pain it caused, the better it was doing the job! That I could always handle. But when my grandad showed up with a tbs. of castor oil when I played hookey, that was a whole different issue. I went to school fast. totally healed. Cured before the dosage. You shoulda seen his grin!

yep
Oh how times change.
I can see it now.
One of us at drug store: I need to purchase some iodine please.
Pharmacist: Iodine? What on earth do you need iodine for, it's a controlled substance!
One of us at drug store: I'm a moonshiner and I need it to figure out when my starch conversions are finished.
Pharmacist: Oh, no problem as long as you're not using it in a meth lab!

I bought a tincture of Iodine less than a month ago at Albertsons.
I'm in Oregon too.
I haven't heard of this. It's not pure Iodine crystals if that's what you're looking for, it's like 5% I think, I can't find the bottle at the moment.
Perhaps they realized that banning pseudoephedrine did nothing to curb the problem?

They're on a tear to try and control all the substances used in making various drugs, especially meth in the U.S. I think you need some sort of pan or skillet to cook it with also ... better watch out, next week you'll need a permit to buy a cooking pan.

I got scared about this iodine drought, and saw some at the local grocery store today, bought two bottles just to be safe. On the way home I saw this vision -- ATF breaking down my door, they aren't smart enough to recongnize my still, but they send me off to prison to be some guys bitch for owning four bottles of IODINE!! What the hell is a poor shiner to do???

Cheers Oregonians!
Gos bless Canada too. Is a shame nobody here has even heard of the Trailer Park Boys.
It's really a shame My Government(s) feel the need to punish everyone for the actions of a few (who are apparently getting what they want anyway). Anyone notice that non-ephedrine based allergy medicine jumped in price after the proscriptionizing too?
I'm sort of disappointed at the state of affairs. Nothing new:) That's the way it's ALWAYS been. From the time when one person had something another didn't. Perhaps that is what it is to be human?
Please pardon the semi political rant. The more I think about it, the more irked.
Can't we all just get along?

I'm doing my first cooked mash as I type - DWWG - and used my Povidone-iodine antiseptic stuff which is all I can now get to test for starch conversion.
It turns blue alright but I really have no idea whether or not it will remain 'red'. Perhaps this particular wash doesn't remain red as it's been boiling happily away for an hour so far.
It would be handy if this stuff does indicate a full conversion cos I'm rooted if it doesn't. Iodine is just not available here.

Never realized it was this serious.
I called around and found that I could buy it at the scientific supply store (filling out the proper paper work).
Also I called 3 breweries in the area and asked about testing, and all three said they would test a sample for me.

DHead, I don't think it takes more than a fraction of that.
I was talking to a friend who works for the forest service tonight. He mailed me a bulletin from the DEA that was sent to him that explained current methods of meth production. From what I read in the memo forest service workers are encountering propane tanks used to produce it. The problem is that the tanks are left (over) pressurized with highly flammable chemicals.
There is a real war of sorts going on here about this stuff. Everyday I see the tweakers begging. There is a sub-classof people with no teeth that lie, cheat and steal. They stole the phone cables 3 times from my roommate's work, Steal batteries from my work, etc...
Tweakers are a clear and present danger to all of us. They have time, opportunity. motivation and devotion to a single minded pursuit.

Re:
Yes, this works fine for me. Iodophor has .25 - 3% concentration. But you don't need that much iodine to test for conversion. If it turns purple, then there's starch. I use BTF iodophor, which is the common brand at my LHBS.Big J wrote:I'm pretty sure iodophor has enough iodine in it for it to work. I've noticed at the brewery that I work at that it reacts (color change) with starchy liquids. Although I've never tested it thoroughly. You should be able to get iodophor at your LHBS or local chemical supplier.
Cheers,
J
Re: Iodine
some may look at me funny, but i have a saltwater reef aquarium, i use iodine, calcium and ph uppers and downers. now, before someone saysi use fish tank water, lol, reefs tanks are fussy and anything "unhealthy" and it will let you know, by dieing over night. http://www.thatfishplace.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow has it all. there are others also. its not as cheap as over the counter stuff, but i have it and the fish don't miss a tea spoon here and there........

Re: Iodine
Try asking for Lugols solution - it is a a pure iodine solution. Tell them its for protection from radiation for your thyroid.
