Are forum members getting more aggresive?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

i didn't see any mention of being BS'd as a reason for getting riled up and ranting at someone (e.g. Bo Duke, Johnny Reb). :x

edit- add: i think there are some people that get a kick out of messing with people. i don't mean the good friends type of messing, but the type of behavior where they lie and misrepresent themselves just to get a rise out of other people. and these type of people have a lot more people that they can annoy, belittle and torment by getting on the web and joining a forum or two.

as for me, i'm trying to learn, and i might get frustrated by misinformation from supposed experts or when too much of the real experts time is wasted on meaningless questions or noob questions.

BW Redneck wrote:Got the solution for this searching problem.

I tried "spiced rum" as an example here. Marking the first button after the keyword blank (search for any terms or use query as entered [the default choice]) returns 781 matches, the top only mentioning "rum", not "spiced rum". Marking the second bullet (search for all terms) reduces this to 33, and they're much better hits. This button does the same thing as if you had placed AND between every term.

Adding AND between the terms is explained off to the side, so it's just a matter of not paying attention.
Gee, thanks for that lesson, BW.

There is a big difference between searches using the OR and AND functions, and searches using a specific phrase enclosed in quotations marks (ie "spiced rum"), which is a much more accurate way of searching a database.

For example: If you Google "stainless steel half coupler", you get 4 hits. If you Google 'stainless steel half coupler' (ie without quotation marks, which Google reads as 'stainless AND steel AND half AND coupler'), you get 877 000 hits. Bit of a difference.

Given that spiced and rum tend to go together anyway, perhaps 'spiced rum' may not be the best example to use. Even so, 33 threads is still quite a lot to read through.

I don't know if PHP can do this kind of search, but it would make a big difference if you could add it, Uncle Jesse.

I have noticed some of the newbees making some negitive comments Instead of giving answers,or pointing people in the right direction. There have been some, that just wont get it,and keep asking questions after they have been given the answer 3 times. They get put in there place, and should be,but Ive been seing some of the new ones making fun on some that have asked for help, even after they have done some reading. So,yes some are getting too agressive. Its real easy for them to do setting behind there keyboard. :D

Don't doubt that your a old shinner But don't believe your spelling is this bad.Had a friend once who in school studied handwriting. If you're a bad speller then yes, you do repeat your mistakes...if you're writing by hand. Now add to the fact that some people are poor spellers and even poorer hunt-and-peck typists. It's not easy for everyone to type.

Ever since these forums went online some of our poorest spellers are some of our most knowledgeable distillers. We're also unique in that most of the people who really know this craft are older and didn't necessarily grow up with a computer keyboard in their lap right next to their sippy cup.

Many of our contributors here are my dad's age and older and I like the fact that they've found a comfortable home here.

It's the knowledge that counts. Instead of being bothered by it, you should enjoy the fact that you're privileged enough to learn from some old timers. If it wasn't for the internet, most of us could never have any contact with true old time shiners and distillers and we'd have to struggle for years to learn on our own. Even then we'd never figure it all out.

I don't know if you've ever ventured into any small towns down in the southeast where moonshiners are most abundant, but they're hardly willing to start telling outsiders where to go to find moonshiners to talk to about their craft.
If only the best birds sang, the woods would be silent.

Reason I'm here is because an old southern gentleman introduced me to good whiskey and ruined factory swill for me, I have a lot of respect for the people who can do things without needing a degree hanging on the wall. And I'm about as Yankee as you can get (time to put on the flame resistant suit :( ).

Dunno about 'old' forum members getting more aggressive, but lately I've noticed that a few of the new members and guests seem to get quite aggressive when they ask stuff that shows that they haven't read a thing or done any of the hard yakka. They then get toey because the answer they get isn't the answer they want, for christ sake!!!!!!!!!

When it's suggested that they read Tony's book some say that they have and become quite demanding and insulting , but really, one needs to go a little further than the Table of Contents.

This is when a tinge of sarcasm appears, and IMHO is a fair call.

"The Simpsons Already Did It"

I use and abuse a multitude of forums. I have a lot of hobbies and interests. (google my username).

From what I have come to accept is that there are basically two types of discussion groups:
Groups that are involved in modern developing technology, in my case kites, computers, air guns, cameras etc.. where manufacturers are constantly offering new products.
Groups that focus on existing technology where development of said technology is stagnant or undesired, fire starting, leather craft, flint knapping, etc.
Truth is that industry does not provide a steady stream of stuff to consume for the home distiller.
Could it be that aggressiveness is the result of everybody already said it and there's not much more to say?
I may be surrounded by insanity but I am not insane!

I used to belong to a gun related forum that was originally interesting because of the technical discussions. Guns lead to a LOT of technical discussions. Over time that forum became harsh, full of vitriol and cricitcism and outright personal insults. I have not visited it now for about 2 years I guess, as it was just a drain to read it, or to attempt to participate in it.

This forum is a breath of fresh air in comparison - what little rancor I have seen has been quite mild and short lived. There is a tendency to jump on newbys for asking kindergarten level questions, and I really don't see a problem with that. When you get those kind of questions you tend to think that this is a person that is not serious and won't be on the forum for very long, else they would have certainly done some homework first.

Then too there is a very natural tendency to have a bit of paranoia about new people asking questions - after all in some locales this hobby can put you behind bars. Many Americans in particular have no particular love, or trust in, the federal law enforcement agencies. Not after having witnessed many egrigious violations of our rights.

The search feature is wee bit awkward, returning a lot of hits - BUT it also highlights the search term so you can scan thru the posts quickly to determine how much relevance it is going to have. I used it quite a bit and found it OK. Between the wiki and the search engine I have been able to answer just about any question I had.

In my umble opinion, this is not an agressive or spiteful forum. About the only improvement I could ask for is an Aussie slang dictionary  what in the hell is a bandicoot?

Oh, and a bandicoot is a small ground dwelling mammal. Very cute and cuddly. Make great pets. Can't think of a North American equivalent offhand.

A wild wombat's what you want for a pet.
Up the hills shooting last week, we dared the young fella to crawl down a fresh muddy hole. Said 'Don't come back without the wombat'.

That'd be a feat and a half if he'd been up for it, although we were a long hike from a hospital

A wombat is about 50lbs of muscle packed into a sack with 4 short feet, kinda like a stumpy badger, i just couldn't imagine anyone making one go somewhere it didn't want to....

That bandicoot looks very similar to an opossum.

Cool Beans on the slang dictionary! Thanks! :D

Ugh on the bandicoot if it is like a possum - possums are filthy critters, nothing more than big slow rats. I shot one once and blew its stomach open, which was full of maggots. Apparently the possum had been feeding on them. Never wasted another shell on one after that. I had thought of eating it before I shot it, but not after.

How do you think us Aussies get on. We talk strine and have to understand English and American as well.
Strewth mate, we're tri-lingual and that's without all the other languages you have to understand to be able to eat in some of the restraunts with fancy menu's.

Sad thing is all our unique Australian-ism's are being shunted out of the yard by all things American (no offense to our US buddy's). I wouldn't be surprised that one day there will be an extra star on the ol' stars and stripes.
It is most absurdly said, in popular language, of any man, that he is disguised in liquor; for, on the contrary, most men are disguised by sobriety. ~Thomas de Quincy, Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, 1856
