Bachelor Food

Post by Skymeat »

Living without a steady woman (or man if that's how you roll) in my life has taken it's toll on me. Easy clean up and low prep time is my game.

My new discovery:
Hot Pockets and Chili. If you follow the directions to bake the Hot Pocket, and put an opened can of chili, sans paper, on the baking tray both will finish simultaneously.

A sad state of affairs to be sure.

I'd be interested in other bachelor food that goes beyond ChiliMac.

Do you know what a "pocket" is? I have absolutely no idea. :(

I assumed it was like the pizza pockets we have here. They look like a normal bread roll on outside but once you bite in they reveal a gooey, cheesy pizza. Not much chop normally but they are pretty good after 1/2 litre of UJSM.

The "Hot Pocket" is a frozen food. They are generally a simple pastry crust filled with processed filling (ham&cheese, chicken&broccoli, etc..).

I love the international nature of this site. What do you guys eat in OZ land?

I was between wives from 97 to 99. I learned a lot of the bachelor food too.
I hear you on the pockets. I would spend so much time on the puter that I would buy puter friendly food too. Corndogs were a staple.
A variation of your hot pocket chili is the good old tamale chili.

   Almost anything would be OK after that. Well, almost anything after hearing some of the stuff that people in this forum eat.

Unfortunately, I didn't know we had Pizza Pockets until just now. Life is different in the bush.

DunderHead are you in the PNW? If so I might show up for dinner.

I started a veal demigloss tonight for Thanksgiving. 30lbs of bones boiling for about a day. Looks really good at the moment, and the house smells nice.

I don't always eat shite, just during the week.

It's 4th Thursday of November!!

But this is a special Thursday. We call it Thanksgiving. Where the Pilgrims met the Indians. We had a great feast, and the genocide ensued.

It's a national Holiday here.

We celebrate by cooking turkey and watching (American) Football.

In the summer time stick a frozen pot pie on the dash board of your car in the morning and it's good and ready by lunch. Even works in colder months if it's not real cold and sunny, if it's still a little cold start the engine, pop the hood and sit it on the exhaust manifold for a little while. Also works well with anything wrapped in foil….Be careful not to start any grease fires…
beer
Almost anything frozen and microwaveable. Jose Ole burritos cost a little more than some of the others but they are f**king awesome in comparison.
Hot dogs
Beer
There are a whole lot of interesting ways to prepare ramen noodles.
Canned soup and meats. Canned beef or pork(not spam) and a bottle of BBQ sauce makes a mean sandwich
Fry daddy’s, Crock pots and lean mean grilling machines kick ass
BEER
Little Casers hot and ready $5 pizzas

I've been batching for a while now. But I still eat pretty well. Had a few health problems early on in my life, some of which I still live with, and I learnt my lesson.

Lots of fresh fruit and veg and nuts, some I grow for myself. Whole grain breads. Plenty of pulses. Some fish and chicken, and a nice thick steak every few days. LOVE a good steak, and a nice lamb roast too, (sorry cows and lambs, but I come from farming stock, and couldn't ever be a vegetarian).

I do have a weakness for dark chocolate.

Nothing really beats a chop, burger or steak on the grill for me. I also like these new bags of vegetables in the frozen section that have the sauce pre-made right in the bag in chunks. You just dice up a pork chop, chicken breast or whatever you have ... cook it until done in the pan and throw a couple handfuls of this veggie mixture in and 5 minutes later you have a stir-fry with some cheese sauce or whatever was in the bag.

It's been awhile since I've been single .. but my tastes have changed over the years.

And the previous post was right, after several drinks, a lot of things taste good that you normally wouldn't go out of your way to eat.

My favorite drinkin food would have to be White Castles~!

Many years ago - I would make a can of chili and pour it into a small bag of "frito corn chips". Fold the top of the bag over and eat right out of it with a plastic spoon. Clean up involved putting the spoon in the bag and throwing it in the trash.

Down here they have a popular food called Frito pie, which is basically that sans the bag. They throw some chili in a bowl, top with cheese and fritos.

They even serve that at the schools once a month, lol.

Canned soups, stews and chili reheat real well when tied to the exhaust manifold of your truck for a hundred miles or so.

gawd I am damn glad I am not a bachelor any more.

Gotta good one, I do. We argue/fight like the "Honeymooners", but I doubt either one of us could see life worth living without the other.

My wife is a very good cook which is a good thing because one thing I can't stand is cooking. I ate better than most as a bachelor though. A pork chop and a couple of artichokes was one of my favorite quick meals.

I do very little "fast food".

I like to cook, and I like to eat, so time in the kitchen is quality time to me. I bake breads and cook meals that take all day.

It might be a good idea for me to lose a few pounds, but at least I'm not eatin' chemical laden processed food. A large portion of my diet is self-grown food. I can in all honesty say that even in the middle of winter I eat at least one thing every day that I grew and put up.

A man the same as me.
The missus reckons i'm the only person who takes 3 hours to cook 4 minute noodles.

Husker, you and i are the lucky ones 8)

Soup is one of the tastiest, easiest things to make. It's very versatile too.

Just chuck some meat (like chicken legs), some bacon, carrots onions and celery, salt and pepper, chilli, couplea spices, bit of sesame oil, some black sauce and a teaspoon of sugar in a BOP when you come home from work and set it to simmering.
1/2 an hour before you're ready to eat, chuck some nice vegies in and a tater ot two, then while you get a bowl and spoon setup chuck a handfull of dry pasta in it (curlys or bowties or somethin).

Top tucker that although it took three hours to cook, only involved 15 minutes of effort. Not much more effort than cooking processed food, but tasty and nutritious. 8)
Make a big pot, freeze some, after a couplea days, thicken some up on the stove with some cornflour and chuck it in some frozen puff pastry for a top pie.

Ramen. Subsisted off it in college. I bet I'm also the only idiot who has burnt it.

On another note, ramen is used as an indicator of how bad the economy is doing. Since it's cheap and energy dense, people buy more of it when they're low on money. it fits in the class of "inferior good", if ya study economics.

Other than that, grilled cheese, egg sandwiches (eggs are easy to fry, even for a college kid), and whatever GI tract-unfriendly food was at the commons, usually fried chicken.

Never, ever ate at fast food restaurants. Haven't done so since I don't know when. Months, probably.

If I was forced to cook myself a meal in college I'd use a little 2 quart electric pot to make as much oatmeal or cream of wheat as it would hold. Nothing easier except maybe couscous

CoopsOz: A smart ass remark won't dent me a bit. I'm one myself, and sometimes can be a bitch too. Wouldn't hold it against you.

I'm surprised by the amount of cooking while driving recipes. I think I need to buy an old Chevy Nova, then experiment, drive around, and bust out:

"The Blue Collar Laborer's Guide to Single Men's Cuisine".

Macaroni and cheese mixed with corned beef hash is excellent. Make sure you have plenty of TP on hand the next day.

Thanksgiving went well. Ended up with 3OZ of veal demi. I made herb encrusted rack of lamb with veal demi sauce. It went over well to say the least.

Cheers All,
