Quite right mate, i have seen this thread in the past (now that you've pointed it out) same as i saw all the threads before i posted at all.stoker wrote:such topics already exist.
like one. And it's interesting to look at the pictures posted before you joined the forums. there are quite a lot of them all together.
Most of the gear on there makes me hang my head in shame anyway.
But still, i like what i drink i spose....
a better plan would be to look for a decent host I suppose.
maybe pintoshine or UJ have some place on their server?
friday I have my last exam, then I plan to do some forum-summary stuff, could do that for the picture topics too. These forums have so much stickies. they loose their power when there are too much of them. just my opinion

Here is where I learned, my 10 gallon still:
If only the best birds sang, the woods would be silent.

GOT BAIT?
small children left unatended will be sold as bait

might be a preheater of sort just guessing tho..good questionHookLine wrote:Uncle Jess, what is the function of the pipe that comes out of the top of the boiler and down the side into the valve at the bottom? What happens on the other side of the valve? It looks like it goes under the bottom of the boiler.

yep
There's a hole in the bottom of the still with a 90 degree copper fitting. Copper pipe loops around a few times under the still and then comes out the side into that valve you see. The copper tube does not cover the center of the bottom of the still where the flame hits.
As the beer heats up it passes up that tube on the side thanks to convection and acts as a pre-heater or beer recirculator. Turning off the valve stops it.
The thing has been clogged for a long time unfortunately because I like the way it made my beer heat evenly and the backset was always a different color when the preheater was working.

Yep, made it a lot better heating up and so on.
On my 300 gallon still I use a pump to recirculate.

Excellent setups UJ. and Stoker, good pre-heat idea U.J. I also like the external cooling coil Stoker thats serious cooling power. Your right about the Liebig is on the long side but my whole process of building has been based on the ability to interchange parts and be able to go from a pot still for some excellent flavor or to a reflux column at 24", or slap on the other 24" section for 48" for some "High Octane" spirits, Make it all in 1 swoop, Kill 2 birds with 1 stone!!
the external coil is added before I had the libieg. now I don't use it anymore.
the reflux condenser just has to condense the vapor, not cool it. the hotter the better for the equilibrium. the cooling of the liquid itself is only necessary for the % you take off and dont send back in your column. and there I have my liebig.
at least, that's my idea.
