Oak Lump Charcoal and JD barrel chips

They sell oak lump charcoal here at the local supermarket. I was wondering if this can be used to age on? There is also the JD barrel chips. I was wondering if these can be used?

I use the JD barrel chips. Just char them and add about an ounce to a quart.

So are the JD barrel chips better to use than oak chips or cubes from a homebrew store? Or are they just more readily available?

I have available JD chips. My second choice would be red or white oak that I cut myself. The chip from the brew shop should be fine.

I've had good luck with the JD barrel chips. I have also charred white oak sticks (locally cut & dried) and used them with the UJSM. I plan on using toasted apple wood (also local) on a run of apple brandy and on a rye mash.

Used JD barrel chips in wine and beer with good results.

Much much cheaper than oak chips or cubes from the brew shop.

If you don't want the char just trim it off.

Can the lump charcoal for aging? or can it be used to filter?
