Corn Mash

Post by Uncle Jesse »

A few photos of our first full size corn mash. Very first mash so there's no backset yet.

That's a lot of grain.

Must be nice to finally get under way, after all that freaking paperwork and inspections.

And have fun.

As Zappa put it, "The Torture Never Stops." There's always more and more paperwork but we're certainly glad to be producing legal alcohol at last.

I think your setup matches the definition of "bells and whistles." Needless to say, from either a beer or distilling vantage, I'm very jealous. Good luck with your enterprise!

Congrats on the first full size mash!

If that were me, I'd be nervous with excitement and anticipation no matter how many times I did it before. :D
I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left.

those are pneumatic valves which control where we can pump/drain the wort etc.

rakes

Post by Uncle Jesse »

The mash is agitated by rakes inside the mash tun. There's also one along the bottom which is slanted and about 3" high which rotates. What you see in the mash tun is a thin wort I ran over the grains since I couldn't ferment on the grains this time as I normally do.

At the top of the photo you'll see a round ring. It's got holes drilled along the bottom at various angles and this is what is used if the wort is sparged.

the easy answer is that I need to give the grains to a farmer and I have no way to dry them out...not sure they'd want drunk cattle :)

Most corporate-farmed cows should have cirhossis from the fermented silage (I think I've read that somewhere...)

Well, maybe not most of them, although I'm not doubting the fact that a few might. Most feedlots use corn because a batch of spoiled silage can kill an entire herd. (Listeria mold will tend to do that)

Anyway, I'm glad that you've actually gotten off the ground and are in the process of making real spirits. Stupid government regulations making businesses so hard to start.
