It's Uncle Jesses fault !
Uncle Jesse cited in Divorce case !
Only joking - but I began to get some "ear ache" from the other half about the amount of time I spent down in the "Shed"
The latest session producing an essence still :-
It's all silver soldered (cadmium free) apart from the last joint from the water jacket Mr Sod came in and I ran out of O2 so that's soft soldered. The fun started when I took it upto the Kitchen for a Vinegar cleaning run.As soon as the cooling hoses filled up it tipped over and spilt it all over the cooker. "Well it'll give the cooker a good clean"was no excuse and after another trip to the "Shed" to make a bracket and drilling a 10mm hole in the side of the cabinet next to the cooker, for a bolt to hold it :-
For some ? reason Mrs QDanT went Ballistic!!! I said "Uncle Jesse made me do it "
cheers all Danny

And that copper and lid assembly looks like some sort of experimental musical instrument gone wrong. (Actually, I quite like it.)

Same here. Looks like the back end of a trombone that's been bent.HookLine wrote: And that copper and lid assembly looks like some sort of experimental musical instrument gone wrong. (Actually, I quite like it.)
I do agree with goose here, though. The output should be a bit further away from the heat source, especially since you're using gas.

Thanks for the replys I'll take them onboard but I was going to follow John Stone's :- Making Gin and Vodka where it's only the botanicals (Juniper berries etc.) and water in the still "The botanicals and water are placed in the flask and the water brought to the boil. The steam generated releases the flavouring constituents from the herbs and carries them over into the condenser in the form of oily drops suspended in water."BW Redneck wrote:HookLine wrote:

"To each bottle containing 75ml or so of distillate add an equal volume of 94% alcohol. This will dissolve the globules of oil and also act as a preservative. To use this flavouring essence, add about 10ml to each litre of 40% alcohol"
Any comments on this ?
it would be no problem to make a 10mm extension with a slight bend and join it to the output with a coupler to run an alcohol/essence run through and put the collection jar on the floor ?

Don't know how long you had another half but time will teach you that you got to do projects for them.but I began to get some "ear ache" from the other half about the amount of time I spent down in the "Shed"
Occasionally I will suggest some simple wood working project like "let me make you a small shelf to place your knickknacks on" and she will say "thats a great idea". Thats the go-ahead code word
I disappear into the "club house" every night for weeks and when she ask how the knickknack shelf is coming along..well, it's still in the planning stages but it won't be long until the build stage starts
Of course, a couple of trips a week over to Dooley's barn to borrow the jig saw or help him with the "project" for his wife comes into play also.
After several weeks the finished product is presented and then you start thinking up the next escape plan.

Old Blue, I've only been married for 16 years and I'm still young so I like a little more fight. When my better half bawls about my time in the shed I ask her how long she been on the phone. Well it's funny for a minute.

That is very nice workmanship,
You are obviously an Australian caravaner and I could see a broad market for your invention.

Yes after 25 years I was too slow.I should have said that the bolt was to hang kitchen utensils on! To make cooking easierOld_Blue wrote:Don't know how long you had another half but time will teach you that you got to do projects for them.
Or maybe "I'm taking the kitchen over as an R/D Laboratory.
But back to the question has anyone used the water method for Botanical extraction ?

Re: It's Uncle Jesses fault !
The only botanical extraction I have done is for spearmint oil. It took advice from an expert to get it right. Basically I pack as many mint leaves as I can possibly fit into my extractor pot. I then weigh them down with a granite stone that weight about 7 lbs. I add just enough water to come half way up the stone. The is is a gentle flame to get it boiling. When the mint oil comes across, it floats on top the water after it cools down. I use a water separator which is a nice little gadget that allow the water on the bottom to be removed leaving the oil behind. There is no need for alcohol with mint except to get it to blend with something that is mostly water. For candy and liqueurs it mixes readily. There is a lot of good video on youtube about herb essence extraction.
Re: It's Uncle Jesses fault !
Great info. Pintoshine many thanks. It would have taken ages if at all to work the mint one out.I'll post the results of my experiments to maybe help others. As for U-Tube I'm only on a 56k dial up (win 98) and it's too slow to stream vid's
