by the way I did not attribute the quote "this ain't stamp collecting" to myself. I said one of my users had said it and I found it poignant...and that user as far as I can recall was Hookline.

Sounds like the sort of comment that one could expect from an Aussie, bless his heart.Uncle Jesse wrote:by the way I did not attribute the quote "this ain't stamp collecting" to myself. I said one of my users had said it and I found it poignant...and that user as far as I can recall was Hookline.

Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading
Cumudgeon and loving it.

Nice read uncle jesse. there was one quote that said you can buy it for what you can make it for. Not sure I agree with that statement. I can make 3 qts of rum for what I can buy 1 of the middle of the road stuff.

Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
yeh but factor in time, equipment costs, propane or electricity and so on and it's a much bigger hassle to make 3 quarts than to go buy a bottle.gs_moonshine wrote:Nice read uncle jesse. there was one quote that said you can buy it for what you can make it for. I can get a good Tennessee whiskey off the shelf for under $15 for a 750ml bottle.

Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
yeah that would be true if it were hassle, but I'm sure you'd agree we would rather call if fun.
Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
From what I heard recently, there is a shift from cooking meth, to making 'shine happening. Really hope that is just a rumor, or we will have the cops out with corn sniffing dogs.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

Goodness, I'm offline for 3 days and you are all talking about me behind my back!blanikdog wrote:Sounds like the sort of comment that one could expect from an Aussie, bless his heart.Uncle Jesse wrote:by the way I did not attribute the quote "this ain't stamp collecting" to myself. But hey, I get my 15 minutes (seconds?) of international fame, and for distilling! I can now slide into eternal anonymity, a happy man.
Thank you kindly, UJ, and Mr B.
Yeah, it was a pretty good article. One or two things in there I am not sure of, like 'most stillers use propane'. Is that true?

Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
I notice someone erroneously commented on the article stating that home distilling is legal in the State of Washington. Oh, how little they understand.

Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
Great little article, definately good to see a positively written and positive spin on an otherwise negatively thought of hobbie.
I know that the larger the cheaper, however, I have costed out my home wine and it comes out to just around $10 a bottle. That means that if I were selling it I could happily charge $20 and be making $10 profit a bottle. And I was charging myself $30/hour . What kind of price are you looking to charge for your whiskey? It will be a while, but do you have any idear?Uncle Jesse wrote:yeh but factor in time, equipment costs, propane or electricity and so on and it's a much bigger hassle to make 3 quarts than to go buy a bottle.gs_moonshine wrote:Nice read uncle jesse. there was one quote that said you can buy it for what you can make it for. Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
Yeh it's me in the A's hat and I let folks who wanted to try a bit of spirit right out of the still, cut with water. Basically the same thing I do when I'm running a charge, tasting for cuts.
As for prices I hope to keep things reasonable but economy of scale says our stuff won't be the cheapest bottle on the shelf. If I can bring a 750 to market for $30-$45 I'll be very happy. Might be more, might be less, we'll see how things go. I'm as concerned about bringing a cost effective product to the average whiskey lover as I am about making a profit.

Re: Wired mag article on home distillers
Once again I must be blind, I don't see any pics with that article to see anybody in a hat. Must be in another post or something. I have my own mental image of what UJ looks like and not sure if I want that spoiled. But if I know there's a pic, I just have to go look, you just can't not look.
15 gallon pot still, 2"x18" column with liebeg condensor on propane.
