I have been using flaked Maize in my straight corn recipe 8lb of it and I was told the other day that cornmeal could be used instead. have any of you folks used cormeal in place of cracked corn or flaked maize and if so would it still be only 8lb.
Thanks RidgeRunner

Corn meal Vs's Flaked maize
There is a fine line between a Hobby and Insanity ;^)
Re: Corn meal Vs's Flaked maize
That all corn meal is "cracked" corn that is cracked finer than feed harder to filter but will work and more expensive

Cornmeal does work, but, as Dunder said, it's hard to filter through. Also, cornmeal has a tendency to burn to the bottom of the mashing vessel if you're not stirring it constantly, and even then, it still does occasionally.

Flaked Maize is steamed so that the starches are already dispersed and hence not required to be brought to a full boil to disperse the starches, other than that, there is no difference. Corn meal will clump up badly and has to be stirred forever, especially at different temps.
Corn Meal is a highly relative term! If you've ever seen the stuff that distilleries mash with, it's just less finely ground than the corn meal you find at the store.
I buy cracked corn at the co-op and grind it to my liking. Filtering is going to be a pain no matter what. However, the finer ground it is, the higher your yield is likely to be because it exposes more of the stuff to convert to starches.
I've always wondered if there was a way to take corn, grind it roughly, steam it, then have it yield good conversion without the pain of filtering finely ground corn.
I've too wondered how the distilleries filter it. It seems that they filter the corn out somewhere between when the ferment is finished (Bourbon distilleries anyway) and it goes into the tank for heating to go through the collumn still.
