Cracked or Chops
Got a question I hear folks talk about getting cracked corn at the local co-op or feed store is this the same cracked corn that we call chops. They just pointed me toward the chops when I mentioned cracked corn. If so it is much easier to get than flaked maize

Re: Cracked or Chops
If it looks like kernals broken into about 6 or so pieces, it's the right stuff.
Look at the tag, should be just corn and maybe soy oil.

It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

Chops is basically for chickens, it's usually perfect crack for what we do. Try to get some without the soybean oil but if you can't you can't.

Where I buy it from calls it "Crushed Maize" ...
$25.00 for 25kg bag

Re: Cracked or Chops
Crushed maize is $22 bucks a bag here
Re: Cracked or Chops
Think I paid $8.50 for 50 lbs. chops, $7.50 for whole corn that I grind like I want it. I could buy a 55 gallon drum full straight out of the field for $20-$25 while they're harvesting. I may do that this year so I know there's nothing added to it like soy oil or the like, I'd just have to check the moisture level and seal it with a canister of dessicant.

Re: Cracked or Chops
Just curious if we're talking the same thing here, at the local co-op I found some cracked corn for feeding chickens. Is it the same thing? I said I was going to make grits out of it and she said it was just corn for chickens. Said if some spills on the floor they just shovel it in the bag. Probably not food grade or for human consumtion she guessed.
(why grits?, because I'm in Canada and nobody around here knows what they are. It was the first thing that popped into my head for an excuse for needing a big bag of corn that was food grade.)
If it is the same thing I'll use that instead of cornmeal which I can get at the local bulkbarn but is more expensive.

Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

Re: Cracked or Chops
I just called up my local feed store and asked for cracked corn. She said $9.50 for 50lbs. Is this the stuff I would need for UJSM and do I need to grind it? I am ready to step away from the brandy makin's.

Re: Cracked or Chops
Seems to me every area has a different name for cracked corn. basically what your buying "or want to buy" is hole corn thats been cracked into pieces. When going to a feed store just ask for 100% cracked corn with nothing added. if they ask tell them your raising some chickens and you want to feed them All natural feed. You could also try looking up your local feed store and research what they sell so when you walk in to buy you sound like you know what your looking for. Doesn't hurt to dress the part either, Old jeans and a hat gets a lot less looks too
I go to several different places and Always pay cash..

You should see the looks I get walking out of Tractor Supply with 50lb. bags of oat or corn over my shoulder in a suit.
Real inconspicuous, I know.

Re: Cracked or Chops
Just called the local feed store, 55lb's of cracked corn is $11.50. All natural/no preservatives.
They also sell whole kernal corn but I didn't bother to ask the price.
Certainly cheaper than the cornmeal at the local bulk barn.
