Hidden Identities

Post by punkin »

Just noticed a couplea spam posts in the classifieds dissapear within minutes.
Checked to see who the mighty mod was who was looking after our interests this morning and there wasn't one logged in.
Seemed strange till i remembered the button that i'd seen 'Hide my status while logged in' or something to that effect. Can pretty much guess who it is, but was wondering if anyone else feels the need for a cloak of invisibility?

So do you hide your status, and if so to what purpose? :?:

Also does anyone else use the other queer little buttons like 'Friends and Foes' or any of that other stuff? :?:

I hide my online status. Don't really have a good reason. I don't figure many people gonna see that I'm online and ask me questions like I do some. For the Mods I think it's a good thing for a couple of them to be incognito. Kids behave better when there might be a parent listening, same principal.

I don't have a need to be incognito.

As with trthskr4 sometimes that reason is why mods do it. Others just don't want to be bothered I guess.

Never bothered to hide my online status. I'm pretty well logged in all day long - I work in front of my computer have a browser open to several places I visit using tabs. Refresh all tabs once in awhile, I guess I show up here whether or not I click the tab this site is on in the browser to read.

It's what I do at the computer, I'll work, hit the compile or upload button - sometimes it takes a couple of minutes to compile or upload something, so I'll read the net while I'm waiting. I figure I'm multitasking :D :D

Sometimes I'll read a post, but don't have time to make a reply, so I'll reply later. I like the Show new Posts page, saves time visiting the different forums and I can see topics that have new replies that I find interesting or I'm following.

I'm sort of like that Google Bot that never leaves :D

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left.

I set the board to expire posts older than 60 days with no responses...and I guess it took me literally when I changed the setting

I've never used the "friends and foes" thing.

There's another forum where occasionally I'll log in as "invisible". Usually it's because I'll see someone online that I've clashed with in the past. And I don't feel like sparking any drama. Much better that they don't even know I'm there.

It was me. I am logged on 24/7 both at home and work (not that I am at the computer 24/7, but sometimes the woman thinks so). I always am logged on with hide status, or it would look like I was a google bot always on. I just happened to finish up with all the shingling of the roof I could do yesterday (got very dark ;) ) and that was the first thing I happened to see was those dam pesky spam adds. Gone, and banned the poster, but he will simply make a new ID. Gave him a nasty note though, about the reason for banning.

Never used the friends or foes thing either. I figure at this point in my experience I don't need to ignore any thing on this forum. :D If I have that much of a problem with someone here I'd use the PM to try to make peace instead of ignoring them altogether. The Mods here are good enough at what they do to keep strife to a minimum as opposed to other forums I've been on. I've gotten in trouble myself recently   didn't realize the limits they go to to keep a fairly peaceful repository and exchange of information. Just makes this site better.

This is one of the best sites I've ever been on. Maybe the best. Actually yes, it is the best.

What trthskr4 said, although I must be one out as I have one foe identified. I certainly don't believe I know 'everything' but I do know that his/her posts won't promote my knowledge. I guess that I should read these posts to add to my knowledge of what not to do. :)

No worries punkin, I'm sure he means me as I know I'm clueless and yet I still open my mouth.

Not that it's ok Vajravarahi, but I tend to do the same thing trying to help someone when I should sit back and watch the pros do it. I would assume since he responded sort of to my post that it's not me either,...yet.

UJ, this does nothing unless you click the button underneath it to actually remove those posts.

On the boards I admin, I have several test accounts which are hidden, but they are only for testing permissions. I keep myself visible, and leave the the default "Deleted", or "Moved To" boxes checked when I need to moderate.... this way people can get the hint...
