Foreshots on second run

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

You may be getting the terms 'heads' and 'foreshots' confused.

Foreshots are the bit that first comes out that you dispose of. Not for drinking.
The collective wisdom here being that 100-200ml each run will do ya for most washes and you chuck em out on every run.

Heads being the next portion you collect in numerous small jars and decide whether to keep as drinking fuel or to recirculate as feints in your next run ( or chuck away too as some here do).

Sound right to me. I think the reflux boys chuck out less, but 100ml is about what i chuck out for a 25 litre wash.

100 - 200 ml on a second run too

Correct. But only because it is more concentrated. I throw about 100-150 ml from a 60 litre sugar wash.

Heads being the next portion you collect in numerous small jars and decide whether to keep as drinking fuel or to recirculate as feints in your next run ( or chuck away too as some here do).
I will state the reason again,

The reason that foreshots are "removed" from the cycle, is so that they do not accumulate and "build up" on subsequent runs. IFF you "recirculate as feints in your next run", and then do so for the run after that, and the run after that, ... adding in the feigns from each prior run, if you DID NOT remove the first foreshots (which are almost entirely higher alcohols, with little or no ethanol), then the head materials would build up, and things would start to get dangerous (and hang over juice would be all you are making). By removing the foreshots from this cycle, you are able to add the feigns from each run, into the next run, to extract the ethanol from them, without building up harmful substances.

Exactly how much foreshots to pull out, will depend upon, 1. How clean the original wash is. 2. How big each run is. 3. The type of run (reflux stills can concentrate more efficiently than a pot still, and thus the foreshot cut can be somewhat smaller).

The rule of thumb of 100-250ml per 25L is pretty safe. Smaller stills will have to up this ratio somewhat, and I think that larger boilers could actually scale this ratio down a little. If you were running a 2500L boiler, I do not think you would have to remove 25L as foreshots. I bet that 3L-5L would be about the right amount to remove from the cycle (if you were batch running a still of that size).

To re-iterate: Foreshots are removed so that the higher alcohols do not build up on batch distillations where prior runs feigns are recycled back into the next run. However, simply properly following the "rule of thumb" instructions of removing the first 150ml from your run as foreshots (from all runs), will keep you safer, even if you do not know why.

Have you just quoted me by mistake Husker or are you addressing me with this?

I only ask as i have read every post on the site at other times and have read this explanation at least fifty times, so am very well aware of the reasons why....even if i don't take the time to type it out when i post... :?:

You can go back to ignoring me if it was posted for sconly's benefit

lol, I do not ignore you punkin. Not at all :) No, you just got caught up in the quote. The message was for sconly or any one else who is overly concerned about the why.

On many types of safety issues, it is better to simply blindly follow the recommendations of people that have been doing this a LONG time, even if it does not make sense (and no, that comment is not directed at u punkin ;) )

Yeah JD. I have a quirky way of putting faces and such on folks after seeing them write for a while or hearing them on the phone. Then I either meet them or something like this and I have a hard time changing my mental image.

I wondered why there was so much wisdom on this site.

It's patronised by wise ol' grandads!!!

I'm feeling decidedly younger (and smarter) just by being in your presence.

How do you guys keep the nurses at the home from confiscating your stills? :D
