your burner btu's

Post by absinthe »

after doing some reading i have found that the BTU's listed with burners is only worked out buy measuring the amount of gas going into the burner and then working out the theoretical energy in the gas, not really testing the heat produced, and also not taking into account the heat just lost in the air flowing around the boiler, wind, metal heat transfer. etc

i did a test on my new homemade burner and I'm putting 19,744 BTU/Hr or 5787 Watts into my pot..

i was wondering what other peoples burners are actually getting into their pots (you need a stop watch)...

easy to work out :

measure the temp of a measured volume of water then turn on burner and start the timer heat for say 5 Min's then record the temp of the water right at the 5 min mark,

Q = m*4186*dT

m = the amount of water in litres

dT = the temp change

then * Q by 0.00094781712

and thats the amount of BTU's transfered in the time you heated
then multiply that by 12 (if you heated for 5 Min's)

or Q*300 for watts.... (300 seconds for the 5 Min's)

cool formula. i'll give it a go next time i run. my burner should put out 60,000btu by the orifice and pressure. i take it the " * " symbol meens devided by. gman

Mines rated at 60,000. Don't know how much it actually puts out, but it's more than enough. :wink:

yeah the * symbol is multiply... my ring burner is something like 60,000 but i can tell you it isn't getting half that into the pot...

(btw 1 BTU is the amount of energy it takes to raise 1 pound of water 1°F) there for it takes 5016 BTU's to raise 10 litres of water from 15°C to boiling (100°C), so the 60,000 burner should do it (with 100% efficiency and no heat loss) in 5 Min's (i think i worked that out right lol)

I just got a 185,000 BTU burner and it really puts off some energy. I need to see how much of it is really coming out, though. It took about 20 mins to get 10 gallons of water to boiling. If anyone is interested I can tell you were to get this nifty little burner for only $39 US, shipped.

Edit: had the wrong price.

http://www.amazon.com/Bayou-Classic-SP1 ... 794&sr=8-1

There's a deal going on right now (at least when I ordered this two weeks ago) where you can sign up for some club they have for free (for one month, after that they charge you something, I don't know what) and you get free two day shipping for one month. I did this, so I got it for the price listed and shipped in two days.

Edit: Had to fix the url.

Edit2: Also, I need to mention that while it is a great burner for an awesome price, the paint burns off and it stinks terribly. Once you get it burned off then it's not a problem.

with 10 US gallons of water with a start temp of 15°C.. and heat to 100°C in 20 mins thats 31,850 BTU's an hour into the water

(edited i thought he said 10 mins :shock: that would make it 63,701 BTU's an hour!!)

it's funny how the jet size never maches the output rating. i drilled out my jet to match the stated btu on my burner and of cource the air venturi was tough to set for a good mix ratio. gman

Firstly - I use a gas, 3 ring cast iron, basic burner.
Don,t know what the BTU's are but according to the calculater on the home site it is roughly equal to 1600w input when having the 2 larger rings operating.
Don't want to hijack your thread or steer you in a direction that you may not wish to take but I am a firm believer in harnessing what power you have, rather than aiming for more power.
Building deflector shields to re-direct the otherwise wasted heat back towards the boiler, in my opinion is much more effective that turning up the heat.
You are then able to harness a larger portion of the heat that your burner is able to produce.

i have a heat shield that i use when i heat (although i didn't use it when i did my BTU test.. i want to see how much off a difference it makes)

its made from the top half of a ring clip 44 gallon drum i used the bottom half for a double boiler setup... i cut a hole in the lid so the keg fits through:

First you lucky you can get three ring burners,(cant seem to fiend in US) but I took mine a part and cleaned it . I found pockets of sand ,etc in it
(90,000 btu)it was sort of lazy flame now it's more like a jet , much cleaner flame. and I thank if I ported , it would be better yet
